Mariko Hashimoto read a story to Sullivan first graders—first in English, then in Japanese. The Japanese visitor also demonstrated origami, the intricate and delicate art of paper folding sculpture, to elementary students. Hashimoto was visiting the U.S. for the first time with her boyfriend, Petty Officer Kurtis Thompson of Sullivan, who served aboard to the USS Independence. He visited the classes with her.
