25 Years Ago This Week

Sullivan paramedics were on scene to treat Bethany residents Jonathan Moody and M. Louise Marshall after a head-on collision on route 121. Both were treated at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Cindy Haegen, George Rutledge and Linda Carlton were elected new board members of the Sullivan Area Chamber of Commerce. Patti Ketchmark, owner of D&M, was inducted in as the new chamber president.
Bethany fell to the number two seed, Findlay, in the Meridian Conference Tournament. It was the best contest of the year for the Mustangs as they traded the lead with the Falcons the entire first half. It was the Falcons who came out strong in the third period when they were able to feed the ball to Dustin Cruit who eventually scored 28 points in the game. Kevin Bowser had a great game leading the Mustangs with 23 points. The Meridian Conference tournament was won by the number one seeded Maroa-Forsyth. Read More

When Dad was doing repairs to the house, one of the repairs consisted of re-plastering part of a wall. He had to remove some broken lath and plaster. We hauled the pieces of lathe to the farthest corner of the backyard near the hog pen to be used as kindling to start stove fires.
Taking the eggs to the house I passed the smoke house (none of us liked smoked meat and Dad was using the building for a work shop). I saw Donny hard at work with a hammer, saw and brace and drill bit. I asked him what he was doing, and, of course, I got a one word answer. Car.
The next afternoon the two little boys and I were in the yard looking for our wagon. We could have left it anywhere as we used it for play and work. Donny joined us with a contraption and announced he had built a car! Read More

The ALAH bench erupts after the Knights score a basket in the regional championship game.

The Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond girls’ basketball team upset Tuscola in the IHSA Class 2A Pana Regional last Wednesday but could not take down the top-seeded host Panthers in the championship game the following night.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our team this year,” said ALAH coach Mac Condill. “You nailed it on the head when you said this team improved day by day, quarter by quarter (for the most part). It was a great group of seniors, and those student athletes over achieved in most people’s eyes. They worked hard, played hard and had fun along the way. They truly left an impact on the future of this program.”
In the title match, a back-and-forth first quarter ended in a flurry.
Knight Marissa Herschberger hit a three pointer with 24 seconds left, only to have Panther Shania Schoonover answer with a basket to end the quarter at 19-13.
Pana extended the lead to 22-13 with 5:42 left in the second quarter, but that was where ALAH began its run.
Herschberger hit another 3-pointer with 5:25 left in the period, and Marcy Petersheim followed with her own 3-pointer with 4:45 on the clock. Read More
