Sullivan High School ‘Open House’ held

On Saturday the 27th, Sullivan High School opened its doors to the community to show them the progress they are proud to have finally accomplished after delays and other typical construction headaches. With new modern and colorful classrooms, updated technology throughout, wide hallways, the new gymnasium (complete with the premium ‘Reserved Seating’ section, which is for season ticket holders only), as well as interior/exterior security camera coverage, the new school brought a vast array of commentary from those who took advantage of the open house.

King Candidates: Ryker McDaniel, Seth Rincker, Branson Tingley, & Heath Westendorf. Queen Candidates: Cameron Carey, Anna Cowger, Haylee Downs, & Leah Kasey. Junior Attendants: Landon Purcell and Addyson Goeckner. Sophomore Attendants: Owen Figgins and Madison Sears. Freshman Attendants: Jackson Hartman & Lily Ault. The homecoming volleyball game will be on Friday, October 3rd, and the dance will be held Saturday. King and queen selection will be announced at the homecoming dance.

Redundancy – does it really emphasize a point?

Word redundancy (not corporate downsizing) is something most are ‘guilty’ of, myself included. I have been known to use phrases such as “Close proximity,” “absolutely essential,” and “end result.” Truth be told, I still do, not even realizing I have done it. Hats off to anyone who has mastered the elimination of redundancy! But what is it, and why does it matter?

Word redundancy is the unnecessary repetition of words, phrases, or ideas that don’t add any new meaning to what you are trying to say. Unlike effective repetition, which emphasizes a point (and is another topic in and of itself), redundancy bulks up communication and makes it less impactful. Short and sweet for the win. But exactly how does it impact what is being said?

Marrowbone/MCHC vaccination clinic

On Monday, October 6th, from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m., the Moultrie County Health Department will be at the Marrowbone Public Library, 216 W Main in Bethany, providing a Flu Vaccination Clinic. This clinic is for individuals who are nineteen (19) years of age or older. Flu vaccines are covered by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. No appointment is necessary. Both high and standard dosage vaccinations are available. For questions, call (217) 728-4114.

Hunters Feeding Illinois returns   Hunters Feeding Illinois returns for its fourth season, in partnership with Feeding Illinois, Access Illinois Outdoors, Southern Illinois Food Pantry Network, and University of Illinois Extension SNAP-Education.  Hunters Feeding Illinois has the mission to connect hunters, meat processors, and food pantries to support access to lean protein for Illinois residents and families. Food pantries in 50 Illinois counties are participating in the program this year.

Lovington Trunk or Treat

On Friday, October 24th, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., the Lovington Park Board will be hosting a “Trunk or Treat” event at the Thomas Conn Community Park, 355 Maple Street in Lovington. Food truck service and concessions will be available for purchase from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A costume contest will be held at 6:00 p.m., with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for ‘best costume’ in the following age groups: 0 to 3 years, Pre-K, 1st through 2nd grade, 3rd through 4th grade, and 5th through 6th grade. There will also be prizes for the best decorated trunk.

Lake Land College will host Laker Visit Day on Monday, October 13th, from 9:00 a.m. to noon in the Luther Student Center. The event is designed for prospective students to learn about programs, opportunities, and resources available at Lake Land College. During the event, Lake Land student ambassadors will lead all attendees on campus tours, providing a student perspective on the College and sharing valuable insights. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet with faculty to learn more about specific programs of interest.
