Sullivan High School Letters to the Editor

News Progress Posted on October 1, 2025 by webmasterOctober 1, 2025

•October 1, 2025•

‘Letters to the Editor,’ written by Cami Badman‘s Honors English III students at Sullivan High School, explored controversial subjects with inquisitive minds and logic as well as emotion-based arguments. Badman opened the school year by challenging the 15 students to present well-rounded arguments for student-selected controversial subjects in the format of a ‘Letter to the Editor’. These are those letters

Dear Editor,

In recent years, many have questioned how to increase focus and mood among high schoolers. Research suggests that the answer may be as simple as getting more sleep. If schools establish later start times, students would improve their mood, academic success, and focus throughout the school day. According to Anayat Durrani, a journalist for U.S News and World Report, “math scores for eighth graders would increase as much as 8 points if schools started one hour later, which many experts say is equivalent to almost a full grade-level increase”. Getting proper sleep will benefit students’ focus and problem solving skills, hence improving their academic success at the same time. Students could see an increase in their grades by almost a whole letter if schools started later.

When Bernadine was one year old, she and her family moved to the Sullivan Illinois area where her parents once lived. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Sullivan and attended the Sullivan schools. She was a cheerleader in her seventh and eighth grade years and received the American Legion awards in both her eighth grade and senior year of high school. Bernadine always loved school. She sang in the high school chorus and also was honored to be chosen the outstanding high school senior girl and homecoming queen in 1945. Bernadine worked for the Moultrie County Treasurer and at the First National Bank in Sullivan. She met Charlie, the love of her life, at a dance and they were later married in 1948 at the First Christian Church in Sullivan. Charlie was a farmer so they lived on a farm near Hammond, Illinois, where they raised Angus cattle, chickens and had a huge garden. They were blessed to have two wonderful children (Keith and Cathy) of whom they were so proud. Bernadine and her family were active members of the Hammond United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School when her children were young. Bernadine loved to sing and sang in the church choirs of Sullivan and Hammond for more than 60 years, as well as a soloist for many of her friend’s weddings. Bernadine enjoyed being a 4-H leader and belonged to the Home Extension for several years. Bernadine worked in the Hammond Bank for eight years and retired in 1977. She loved working with her flowers, canning and freezing fruits and vegetables from her garden plus preparing chickens to enjoy at meals. Bernadine was our family photographer and loved taking pictures of her grandchildren as well as rainbows, sunsets and beautiful clouds. Bernadine leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving family, son Keith (Kathy) Casteel of Decatur, Illinois, three children Ryan (Rana), their three children Heidi Ouf and Aden Casteel of Gainesville, Virginia, Hassan (Alexandra) Ouf and daughter Lola of Glen Allen, Virginia; Seth Casteel of Nashville, Tennessee and Clayton (Maureen) Casteel and children Charlie, Dominic and Isla of Elmhurst, Illinois. Joe was born March 8, 1949, in Decatur: the son of Lloyd Eugene Russell and Theresa Mae (Phillips) Beattie. He was a hard worker for Staleys in Decatur for thirty years. Joe was a huge fan of golfing, it was his number one hobby and he played a good game. He also enjoyed playing pool or doing difficult crossword to keep his mind sharp. He played cards almost everyday mostly solitaire. Watching old westerns was something he loved to do as well but nothing can compare to his family. The love he had for his Wife Jane of 51 years shined through onto their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Joe loved spending his time with his kids and grandkids making them laugh. He had a nickname for everyone and was quite clever when picking them. His laugh was silly, and contagious and will be missed dearly.
