Returning Starters Power Okaw Valley Volleyball Squad

NP Sports

In her second year as Okaw Valley volleyball head coach, Sarah McDowell is looking to build on last year’s successes with every starter but one returning to this year’s squad.
OV returned nine varsity players and six seniors to a club that had a 15-14 overall record and a 4-3 Little Okaw Valley Conference record.
Leading up to the team’s first match, OV has been able to spend less time on skill development and incorporate more drills that focus on running multiple hitting routes and tailoring the defense to fit the player’s strengths.
“I believe our greatest strength is our number of players with varsity experience,” said McDowell. “We only lost one senior (Natalie Jeffers) last year, which has given us the opportunity to build upon what we accomplished last season.”
The team has also been working to improve block coverage by incorporating drills that put the girls in game-like situations and teach them to balance the court at all times. Read More

Public Art Sweeps Through Arcola – New Painted Brooms on Display!

News Progress Posted on August 29, 2018 by webmasterAugust 29, 2018

•August 29, 2018•

The Arcola Beautification Committee in conjunction with Arcola’s premier patron of the arts, Pat Monahan of Monahan Partners, has been working on a project to increase Arcola’s already impressive collection of public art. Arcola’s 15 outdoor murals highlighting Arcola history, the beautiful Raggedy Ann and Andy sculptures, the Veteran’s Memorial, and the Hippie Memorial already make Arcola’s public art popular, but it’s about to get even better.
Soon Arcola’s public art is about to be swept to new heights……
Twelve brightly illustrated oversized brooms are about to be scattered around historic downtown Arcola. Reminiscent of Chicago’s painted cows of a few years ago, Arcola has adopted the slogan “Come See Our Sweeping Beauties” to entice the public to come see the whimsically themed brooms designed and executed by talented artists. Findlay Area Farmer Don Keown Honored With Tractor Cruise

News Progress Posted on August 29, 2018 by webmasterAugust 29, 2018

Findlay Area Farmer Don Keown Honored With Tractor Cruise
Findlay area farmer Don Keown died in April 2018 but his spirit was present during a tractor cruise held in his honor Sunday, August 26. Don’s son, David emphasized his dad loved driving his 1953 International Super M in area tractor rides, and this year the son drove one of dad’s antique collection along with 24 tractors from all over the area that gathered at Findlay School.
Antique tractors, 28 people and a support vehicle made the complete circuit.
The 38 mile journey began on back roads from Findlay to Bethany, down Wilborn Creek Road toward Camp Camfield and to lunch at the Sullivan V.F.W. then back to Findlay.
Don’s brother Larry also drove the 1953 Farmall Super M their father bought new. The ride went from Findlay past the Wright Cemetery where Don is buried and the family had gathered. David pointed out it was a good way to view the country and crops at 12 miles per hour; plus the funds raised went to the Okaw Valley FFA Alumni for future scholarships.

Kevin Gaither, Democrat candidate for the 15th U.S. Congressional District, hasn’t got much money, but he does have a vision for the future.
Gaither, a Sullivan High School graduate, shared that vision at a town hall meeting held in Bethany at the Marrowbone Library on August 23.
In a campaign echoing predecessor Glenn Poshard, Gaither won the primary nomination accepting personal donations, without the benefit of party, political action committee or lobbyist funds.
Last week during Democrat Day at the Illinois State Fair U.S.Senator Dick Durbin recognized Gaither and his struggle to win the 15th district. “It was a thrill to have our campaign recognized by Senator Durbin in his opening remarks,” Gaither remarked, noting party recognition was gratifying.
