25 Years Ago This Week

Ninety-four-year-old Hazel Bentz of Bethany was honored recently for her 13 years of volunteer services for Moultrie County. For the past six years Bentz crocheted afghans for babies which are distributed through the WIC program, CEFS and the Dept. of Public Aid.
The Sullivan Redskin football team is preparing for its ’93 season opener against the Shelbyville Rams. Senior co-captains are David Elder, Jason Wildman, Jason Moody and Bubba Farris. They lead a team of 89 this year with 20 players coming from Bethany and two from Findlay.
Roger and Sally Glazebrook have opened a framing business in Sullivan called Worth Framing. The couple said their goal is to give people what they want at a cost they can afford. The interest came when a friend gave them a print for a wedding gift, and a relative made a frame for them due to the high price of framing. Read More

Black Hawk, Proud Leader of the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Rock River Valley

First, let’s get his name straight. It was Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak. In English, he was Black Hawk, war chief of the Sac and Fox tribe who lived most of his life in the Rock River Valley in northern Illinois.
Black Hawk was born in 1767 in Saukenuk, a Sac and Fox village on the Rock River in northwestern Illinois. He built his reputation as a war fighter leading his tribe in skirmishes against the Osage tribe.
In the late 1700s and early 1800s, a new enemy appeared — Americans, relentlessly moving west from the Eastern states, claiming the land for themselves as they went, building homes and villages and fencing off the fields.
The U.S. Army and state militias accompanied the settlers and protected them against the people who had been there for thousands of years. Treaty after treaty was made between the native people and the U.S. government, and they were regularly broken.
One of those documents was the Treaty of 1804, signed in St. Louis by representatives of the Sac and Fox tribe and U.S. officials. Black Hawk, who had not been at the signing, thought the treaty merely ceded some of the tribe’s ancestral hunting grounds to the American settlers. Read More

Eight people baptized in the river behind Lehman farm in 1883 marked the beginning of the First Baptist Church of Sullivan.
To celebrate its 135th anniversary, the First Baptist Church has planned a community homecoming service and potluck on Sunday, September 9 at the church located at 215 East Harrison in Sullivan.
The service will begin at 10 a.m. with guest speaker the Rev. Paul Gibson, Executive Minister of the Great Rivers Region, delivering the sermon.
The potluck will follow in the church’s Fellowship Hall, and the public is cordially invited.
The First Baptist Church is one of Sullivan’s oldest churches. In June, 1883 S.S. Graham of Springfield; W. E. Barker, Sheldon Boyer and A. Hicks of Cooks Mills, W. F. Sharpe and J. Whitacre met with 14 other people to adopt the Baptist Articles of Faith.
This meeting was held in the Sullivan Armory Hall upstairs in the building on the southeast corner of the square. In 1885 they occupied the hall over the Index store. The Rev. Barker was the first pastor, and the first Sunday School was organized in 1886.
By 1890 the members felt the need of a church home. A $1,000 loan was secured from the Baptist Home Missionary Society with the members and townspeople raising another $1500. The church was designed after the Cooks Mills church and was dedicated in 1890. It was located at the corner of Hamilton and Adams streets. A fire caused by lightning damaged the building, and the tower was removed some years later. The building was later sold and demolished. Read More

The Sullivan/Okaw Valley football team was looking for its first win in nearly two years during its season opener at Nokomis/Ramsey Friday night.
SOV finished 3-6 in 2016 and winless in 2017, but despite playing a tough first three quarters, the Redskins could not overcome a strong 15-0 third quarter run in a 22-7 nonconference loss at Nokomis.
“Overall we did some good things but far too many mistakes on both sides of the ball,” Myers said. “On a positive note, our kids played their tails off. Would have been easy to let up once we got down two scores in the fourth, and they just kept battling. Couldn’t be more proud of their effort.”
Nokomis scored first on a 20-yard pass to Wayden Brown, who ran a cross-and-up route for the touchdown in the second quarter.
SOV answered later in the second quarter when sophomore Ian Plank caught a pass from junior Luke Harlin for a touchdown.
Plank kicked the extra point to tie the game at seven. Read More

ALAH Volleyball Team Returns With Efficient Experience

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond volleyball team returned five seniors to this year’s squad, but the Knights are a relatively short team.
“It will be hard for us to overpower some teams with our small size,” said ALAH coach Emily Crossman. “We will have to use our block to funnel the ball, as the first line of defense, rather than depending on the stuff block. Our hitters have to be smart and play with a purpose.”
But one thing that Crossman can count on is that she has a smart team.
“We have a strategy and know where to place the ball,” she said. “The girls work together tremendously well and support one another in everything.”
For the last few weeks, the team has been trying to perform every play with a purpose. Read More
