September is “Library Card Sign Up” month at the Windsor Storm Library in Windsor. Library cards may be obtained by completing an application and providing proof of Windsor residency. Non-residents may also apply for a card if they pay a non-resident fee. All Windsor School District students are eligible for a free library card, regardless of residency. This past Sunday, Heritage Woods held a Grandparents Day celebration, with friends and family of residents coming to celebrate with their loved ones. The sundaes bar was a hit, but even more was the quality time that families spent together catching up, taking photos, and generously dishing out the hugs and kisses.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville will hold the 15th Annual Youth Firearm Deer Hunt on October 11th and 12th. To apply for the hunt, youth applicants must be less than 18 years old on October 11th and be accompanied by an adult on the hunt. Applications must be received by 8:00 a.m. on September 22nd. Applications can be picked up at the Lake Shelbyville Project Office Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or online at: https://www.mvs.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Lake-Shelbyville/Recreation/Hunting/.

The Sullivan Redskins leaned on a strong rushing attack against Nokomis last Friday under the lights for a 39-23 victory. Aiden Dinger got the Redskins on the board for the only score of the first quarter with a 1-yard rushing TD, and Collin Shain was successful on the PAT. Shain was 3-4 on the night.

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) is partnering with Governor JB Pritzker, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates (NASUCA), and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) to promote Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week this September 7th through 13th. After Amos Williams surveyed the route of the Springfield Road across the northern part of Moultrie County in 1825-26, they blazed the trees in the timbered areas and plowed a furrow with a team of oxen and a breaking plow across the open prairie to mark the route. Thereafter, “the Plowed Furrow” was a name for the Springfield Road along with the “Terry Haute Road”.
Before three years had passed, they were resurveying and changing parts of the route. In 1833, the Macon County commissioners changed it again and ordered another survey of the road to find a crossing over the West Okaw River suitable for a bridge. (Macon controlled the north half of Moultrie in those days.) That’s when the road shifted north to pass through the future site of Lovington and along a string of cabins leading to the site of the new Stringtown Bridge. A few years later, in 1838, the Blackhorse Tavern inn was built along the road, which was the beginning of the village of Lovington.

On Friday the 5th, Sullivan’s Fast Stop held its annual Customer Appreciation Day, celebrating with free lunches to all who arrived-approximately 250 people. The purpose of the event is to give back to the customers and community that supports the store throughout the year. The menu consisted of pork burgers, hot dogs, chips, and a drink served in a red Fast Stop bucket. Giveaways and drawings were also held.
