The Okaw Valley baseball team defeated Decatur Lutheran 8-4 this week to win the Little Okaw Valley Conference title for the fourth straight year in a row.

They earned a No. 1 seed in the Argenta-Oreana Class 1A Boys’ Baseball Regional as a result.

“Winning the LOVC is a great accomplishment for us this year,” said OV coach Andrew Hagerman. “At the top we knew Argenta and LSA would be very difficult wins, and they were. I was surprised at how good both Arthur and Arcola were this year. Those programs are definitely on the upswing, and beating them was not easy at all.”

Against LSA Friday, the Timberwolves scored a run in the second inning, two in the third inning and five in the fourth inning.

OV held on from there as LSA scored three in the fifth inning and one in the sixth but could get no closer.

Garrett Fritz hammered a two-run homer to give OV an early 3-0 lead. Read More

Nearly 50 years before Arcola claimed the distinction, Sullivan’s own Broom Corn Palace welcomed visitors in 1907. Sullivan was staking its claim as the broom raising center of the country.

The “Palace” was a festival feature, which included a street carnival and other attractions. The structure was built from broom corn grown around Sullivan. It was located in the northwest corner of the square next to the Titus Opera House which was located above the  Burton Enslow Clothing store at street level.

The Bristow and Ellis broom corn barn was located at the corner of N. Market and W. Jackson and was in business in the early 1900s. Most broom corn is now grown around Arcola, but before WWI it was big business in Sullivan.  Read More

Thinking About Health: Crowd-sourcing May Bring Transparency to Medical Charges

News Progress Posted on May 10, 2017 by webmasterMay 9, 2017

By Trudy Lieberman
Rural Health News Service

In a recent column I reported on an effort in Ohio to bring price transparency to medical services. Ohio state representative Jim Butler had spearheaded passage of legislation that would require healthcare providers including doctors and hospitals to disclose prices for their services. The law was supposed to take effect last summer, but Gov. John Kasich, the Ohio Hospital Association, and other health groups that oppose transparency have stymied implementation. The governor’s budget for next year calls for repealing the law.

Ohio’s law may disappear, but the demand for information is not going away. Many readers are downright angry after trying hard – and unsuccessfully - to get information to make good medical decisions.

James Friesen, a lending officer at a bank in Kearney, Nebraska, told me when he wanted to pay cash for a cardiac test his insurer wouldn’t pay for, he couldn’t find out the negotiated price his insurer had agreed to pay the hospital. Neither his insurer nor the hospital would say. “The doctor who ordered the test didn’t even know,” he said. “They intentionally keep patient consumers in the dark about pricing.” Read More
