Gladys Marie Walker Sapp, 75, of Sullivan, passed away at 7 a.m., Friday, April 28, 2017 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur.

A Celebration of Life visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. today (Wednesday, May 3) in the Mason Point Chapel in Sullivan with a memorial service following at 7 p.m. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in Roselawn Memorial Park in Springfield. Read More

Mobile Unit in Sullivan

Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with Sullivan Library, is offering drivers a chance to renew their driver’s license or vehicle registration renewal sticker, obtain a duplicate or corrected license, or obtain an Illinois identification card. White’s mobile unit will be available at the Sullivan Library, located at 2 West Water in Sullivan, on May 18 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

“I am pleased to work with the Sullivan Library to bring my office’s services directly to the people,” said White. “This is another example of how my office continues to use technology as an ally to improve upon the delivery of services to Illinois residents.”

An applicant renewing a current Illinois driver’s license or identification card need only present a current valid driver’s license or identification card. If the applicant is applying for either a duplicate or corrected driver’s license or identification card the applicant must present two forms of identification. Mickey Fleener

Mickey Kay Fleener, 68, of Lake City passed away early Tuesday morning, April 25, 2017 in St. John’s Medical Center in Springfield.

Funeral services to celebrate her life were at 2 p.m. Saturday in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home in Decatur with the Rev. Larry Bricker officiating.

Mickey was born April 23, 1949 in Arthur to William Thomas and Mabel Stolley Dean. She married Michael Fleener June 10, 1967 in Arthur. Mickey loved to read, shop, flowers and little babies. Read More

The Sullivan baseball team suffered two close losses this past week.

The Redskins dropped a game to St. Teresa 3-2 Thursday and to Maroa-Forsyth 6-5 last Tuesday.

Against the Bulldogs, Sullivan jumped out to an early lead with a run in the top of the first and second innings.

St. Teresa answered with a run in the third and one in the fourth inning to tie the game 2-2.

The Bulldogs won the game with a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh.

Tommy Schibur, Brett Tuttle and Zach Sowers each recorded a hit for Sullivan.

Schibur and Sowers each scored a run, and Tuttle and Dalton Rogers each had one RBI.

The Redskins had four stolen bases. Read More

Knights Finish on Top in Spartan Classic

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond boys’ track team competed in the 24-team St. Joseph-Ogden Boys’ Spartan Classic in St. Joseph Friday.

Five Knights and three relay teams finished in the top spots.

Life Insurance Companies Compelled To Pay Death Benefits Back to 1996

Legislation requiring life insurance companies to look back to 1996 to identify policy holders who have died and the benefits have not been claimed or paid to their loved ones passed the Illinois House today, Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs said.

The Illinois House passed the proposal (HB 302) by a vote of 68-47. The proposal now goes to the Senate for consideration.

“We must continue to stand up for Illinois consumers and make sure they are getting what they are owed from insurance companies,” Frerichs said. “For decades, we know some life insurance companies manipulated the rules to avoid paying death benefits, and that dishonest practice to help pad their bottom line at the expense of the deceased needs to stop.” Read More

Legacy of Leadership Scholar
Christy Allen of Arthur was named the 2017 IAA Foundation Legacy of Leadership Scholar. Allen is the daughter of Dave and Cathy Allen and is entering her junior year at the University of Illinois, studying agriculture communications. Allen was selected for this honor for her leadership qualities and well-rounded academic experience. She will receive a $7,500 scholarship.

Sign collision at Agri-Fab

In the late afternoon of Saturday, May 31st, there was a single-vehicle accident, with the vehicle making contact with the Sullivan Agri-Fab factory signage located at the factory frontage on Hamilton Street. Per Sullivan Police Department’s Chief of Police, Andrew Pistorius, the airbag was deployed in the incident, and the driver refused medical treatment. No further information is available at this time.
