On Friday, October 24th, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., the Lovington Park Board will be hosting a “Trunk or Treat” event at the Thomas Conn Community Park, 355 Maple Street in Lovington. Food truck service and concessions will be available for purchase from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A costume contest will be held at 6:00 p.m., with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for ‘best costume’ in the following age groups: 0 to 3 years, Pre-K, 1st through 2nd grade, 3rd through 4th grade, and 5th through 6th grade. There will also be prizes for the best decorated trunk.

Lake Land College will host Laker Visit Day on Monday, October 13th, from 9:00 a.m. to noon in the Luther Student Center. The event is designed for prospective students to learn about programs, opportunities, and resources available at Lake Land College. During the event, Lake Land student ambassadors will lead all attendees on campus tours, providing a student perspective on the College and sharing valuable insights. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet with faculty to learn more about specific programs of interest.

Adiline Young, 87, of Arthur, passed away 10:40 p.m. Sunday, September 28, 2025, at Haven of Arcola.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 4, 2025, at McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service, Saturday at the funeral home in Sullivan. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Arthur First Baptist Church.

Joseph (Joe) Eugene Russell, 76, of Sullivan passed away peacefully at 8:05am on September 25, 2025 at Eastview Terrace, Sullivan.
Services were held Monday September 29, 2025 at the McMullin Young Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial will take place at a later date. Memorials can be made to donors’ choice.

The Marching Redskins competed at Mt. Zion High School on Saturday, September 26th, and received second place in Class A. The Color Guard was recognized as best in their class. The Marching Redskins will compete again next Saturday at Eastern Illinois University.
Former State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) announced his candidacy Thursday for State Representative in the 102nd District. “My service in the Illinois House of Representatives was the highlight of my public service. I’m looking forward to serving again and helping turn Illinois around.” Halbrook served as State Representative from 2012 to 2015.

A mostly routine Sullivan City Council meeting ended with a lengthy discussion about what to do about stray cats last Monday night.
Almost 40 people attended the meeting but none spoke during the public comment section of the agenda. The final item, a council discussion about the problem of stray cats turned into almost an hour of debate with Mayor Mike Mossman saying “We’re not going to solve this problem tonight.”

Sullivan Southern Baptist Church invites the community to join in celebrating its 75th Anniversary on Sunday, October 12th, at Sullivan Southern Baptist Church, 615 E. Jackson Street in Sullivan.
The day will begin with a 10:00 a.m. worship service that will highlight the history and heritage of the church since its founding in 1950. The guest speaker will be former pastor Don Evans. Pastor Don Lusk will bring the morning message, and longtime members will share stories of God’s work through the congregation over the past seven and a half decades.

The City of Sullivan is introducing TextMyGov, a convenient and smart text messaging service. This service will enable residents to effortlessly receive important notifications and easily find specific information by texting the city.
Sullivan will officially launch the new text messaging system to the public on October 13th. Residents may receive a text message from 91896 from the City of Sullivan, initiating the service. Residents have the option to opt out at any time by texting STOP.
