Illinois Sport Fish Consumption Advisory is Updated

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has announced an updated consumption advisory for sport fish caught in Illinois waters. These changes are the result of continued sampling by the Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program and do not suggest that Illinois fish are becoming more or less contaminated.

“The advisories are not meant to discourage people from eating fish but should be used as a guideline to help anglers and their families decide the types of fish to eat, how frequently, and how to prepare fish for cooking to reduce possible contaminants,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Windsor Jr./Sr. High School would like to announce the January Students  of the Month. Haley Beck is the daughter of Trent and Angela Beck.  Beck is currently an 8th grade student and is involved in Volleyball, Scholastic bowl, Eco team, Band, Drumline, and Softball. Dalton Armes is the son of Tony and Kelli Armes.  Armes is currently a junior and is involved in Baseball, Assistant Coach for the 5th/6th Grade Basketball team, IHSA SAC, Physics Club, and Student Council.  He plans to attend Lake Land for Pre-Physical Therapy and then transfer to Indiana State University. Margaret June Grinslade, 93, of Lancaster, N.Y. formerly of Dalton City passed away at 7:54 a.m., February 8, 2017 in her daughter’s residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 14 in Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home in Mt. Zion.  Burial was in Mt. Zion Township Cemetery.  Read More

The village of Lovington recently placed its new 2017 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor in operation with help from the John E. Timm Charitable Trust of Arthur. The Trust donated $11,000 toward the vehicle purchase with the village paying the balance to Wright Automotive of Hillsboro after trading the 2010 Chevrolet squad car. Pictured are Chief of Police Christian Swisher, Pam Anklam Police Trustee, Arthur Mayor Matt Bernius Director of the Timm Trust and Lovington Village President Jim Minor. Rodney Stanfill of Central Service Center switched equipment from the old squad car, and past president Barry Morgan designed graphics installed by Dynagraphics of Decatur. Lovington has two full time and five part time patrolmen.

Sullivan Girls End Season with Tuscola

The Sullivan girls’ basketball team fell to Tuscola 37-30 in the Class 2A regional at Sullivan High School Wednesday, Feb. 8.

The loss ended the Redskins’ season with an overall record of 14-13 and 4-2 in the Central Illinois Conference.

Tuscola jumped out to a 12-4 first quarter run and added three more to the lead by half for a score of 22-11.

Sullivan played well in the second half, outscoring Tuscola 29-28, but it was not enough to overcome the first-half deficit. Read More

Lovington Village Board

Jeremy Doggett, water and sewer superintendent, attended the meeting of the Lovington Village Board and distributed handouts from the engineering firm, Farnsworth Group, regarding the chlorine feed modification for the Chlorine Disinfection Exemption Revocation. The cover letter listed the requirements which need to be done by May 1, 2017. Doggett will try to have an estimation of the cost for the next meeting but believes it will be under $10,000. He is of the opinion that Roland Birt and Scott Connelly will be able to do the required work by April 1. Read More

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond girls’ basketball team failed to complete a frenzied fourth-quarter comeback and lost 45-43 to Tuscola in a Class 2A Sullivan regional championship game Thursday night.

The fourth-quarter comeback started with just less than four minutes left in the game.

The Knights cut an 11-point deficit to five when Hannah Wallen hit two free throws, followed by a Liz Shipman free throw and a Marissa Herschberger 3-pointer.

Tuscola called a timeout with 2:02 left, but on the next possession the Knights stole the ball, and Shipman was fouled with 1:25 left.

Shipman’s free throw and a three pointer by Herschberger cut the lead to 39-37.

Tuscola hit four-straight free throws to push the lead back to five, 43-37.

With 10.9 seconds left, Herschberger hit another 3-pointer to cut the lead to 44-40, and with 17.8 second left the Knights forced a five-second call on the inbounds.

With eight seconds left, Shipman hit a three to cut the lead to 44-43. Read More

Renewable Products Get Boost with Proposed Senate Bill

Legislation designed to grow Illinois’ bio-based economy has been introduced by Senator Chapin Rose and Senator Andy Manar. Senate Bill 1656 provides incentives to Illinois businesses to produce and sell new renewable products made from biomass and other renewable sources.

The legislation builds upon Illinois’ strong agricultural base and seeks to provide new products and markets derived from grain commodities and their by-products. Universities and private companies are investing in a race with other states in research and development to introduce these products to the marketplace. Read More

Show Choir Needs Greater Community Support 

In my opinion, there are a handful of community pillars which draw people to the Sullivan Community – Lake Shelbyville, The Little Theater, Agri-Fab and Hydro-Gear, and our school district and community involvement to name a few.  With that said, I am addressing this letter to the Sullivan Community Unit School District #300 School Administration and the Sullivan Community Parents in order to express my observations as a deeply concerned community citizen, parent and fellow Sullivan Redskin Alumnus.

To start off, and in choosing my words carefully, I went on the school district’s website to read their mission statement.  It reads:  “Preparing students for successful lives by inspiring and expecting excellence in ourselves, our community, and in every student, every day!”  This is a great mission statement; however, the words are only as good as the action behind them!
