Pancake Benefit at Bethany CP

Everyone is invited to a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, February 18 at Bethany Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Pancakes, sausage, milk, juice and coffee will be served with the proceeds to benefit Madison Uhlrich’s mission trip to Japan this summer.

In August 2017, Cumberland Presbyterian youth and young adults from Australia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Japan, Laos, Philippines and South Korea will travel to Tokyo, Japan for a youth gathering which reflects CP Church growth in Asia. The purpose of the event is to gather in one place to study new cultures, pray for one another and encourage one another.

A livestock, machine shed, upholstery shop located northeast of Cadwell received extensive fire damage during a Friday afternoon fire. Arthur, Lovington and Sullivan fire departments responded to the building owned by Harvey Chupp. Firefighters were on the scene four hours battling the blaze during intermittent rain.

Icy roads contributed to multiple accidents in Moultrie County. Two people were treated at local hospitals following a three car accident on Hwy 121 one mile west of Route 32.

Three vehicles overturned in separate crashes. The driver of a truck left the road and overturned after striking an embankment on Bruce-Findlay Road at 3:50 p.m.

By 4:30 p.m. a van driven by a Windsor resident left Rte 32 north of Sullivan and overturned. Another driver slid through an intersection on Findlay road and overturned. No serious injuries were reported in the three single vehicle accidents. Read More

Deborah Bobbitt

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial for Deborah Ann Bobbitt, 68, of Decatur was celebrated Feb. 13 in St. Patrick Church in Decatur. Interment followed in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.

She was born Aug. 2, 1948 in Clinton, a daughter of Robert Lee and Patricia Johanna Long Willmore. She was an employee of Decatur Housing Authority in a variety of roles. She married Terry Lynn Bobbitt Oct. 3, 1987, and he survives. Read More

Thirty-five passengers on a Teutopolis school bus took an unexpected detour on the way to a ball game Friday. At 3:19 p.m. the bus was struck on the driver’s side by a van driven by Scarlett McKenzie, 36, of Mattoon and turned over on its passenger side blocking Route 32 at the Bruce-Findlay road intersection. Moultrie County Sheriff Chris Sims reported the bus contained the Teutopolis basketball team, cheerleaders and coaches. Five students were taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. McKenzie was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur and kept for observation. She was ticketed by MCSD for driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to yield. After her hospital release on Monday she was transported to Moultrie County Jail pending further charges from the states attorney. Robert Bothwell of Teutopolis was the driver of the bus. In addition to MCSD, Sullivan police and fire departments, Illinois State Police, plus ambulances from Sullivan, Lovington, Mattoon, Bethany, Windsor, Findlay and Arthur responded to the scene. Walker Wrecker Service uprighted the bus and towed it away. Traffic was detoured through Sullivan 66, Inc. (Howy’s) parking lot. Students were treated by area EMTs west of the parking lot. Sullivan school district dispatched a bus to transport the Teutopolis students. Surrounding school district administrators were on hand to offer assistance as well.

The third annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper at the Sullivan First Methodist Church is 4:30-6 p.m. Feb 28 in the Fellowship Hall. This free event marks the end of Mardi Gras and the anticipation of Lent, which begins the next day on Ash Wednesday. Everyone is invited to the celebration, which will include pancakes with toppings, sausage and drinks. Since it is a party, all who come eat free of charge. Fellowship Hall will be decorated in purple, green and gold with lots of beads on display.

Trivia questions and festive music will add to the party atmosphere.

Pancake suppers are popular events on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and not just in New Orleans.

Since rich foods are often given up for Lent, the practice is to empty the pantry of flour and sugar by making pancakes. People enjoy the butter and syrup, knowing that during Lent they will eat a much blander diet, some even choosing to fast.

When most people think Job Shadow, they think you go to a business a few times, you watch stuff happen for a while, and you go home and try to figure out if that’s what you want to do with your life.

While that does seem to be the case with some experiences, I have to tell you that my Job Shadow class at Okaw Valley High School has been nothing like that.

This course, which was introduced in the 2010 / 2011 school term, was handcrafted by Mrs. Bonnie Scott and Mrs. Ann Wilson, and offers a much more comprehensive and in-depth curriculum than most schools.

According to Mrs. Scott, current teacher of the Job Shadow class, “My goal is for my students to obtain real world career skills that will give them an advantage in life.” Read More

Millikin Percussion Ensemble Presents Free Synergy Concert

Millikin University’s Percussion Ensemble will present its annual Synergy concert on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Kirkland Fine Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

Synergy showcases the distinctiveness of Millikin’s ubiquitous, interdisciplinary alliances through a collaborative concert featuring performances by students and faculty across the College of Fine Arts.

This year’s Percussion Ensemble Synergy concert sets out to examine the relationship between music and the cognitive sciences. The program will explore a variety of interesting musical corollaries including, entrainment, swarm intelligence, dreams and the mind-brain problem. Read More

The Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond boys’ basketball team defeated Arcola Friday and then lost to Dieterich in the Little Okaw Valley Shootout in Cumberland Saturday, Feb 11.

Against Arcola, the Knights doubled the Purple Riders in the first quarter 16-8, before tacking on three more for a 34-23 halftime lead.

ALAH kept the pressure on in the third quarter, outscoring Arcola 14-8 in the third quarter and at one point enjoyed a 19-point lead.

“We played a great first three-quarters of the game, maybe the best basketball we played all year,” said ALAH coach Dale Shuring.

Then the momentum changed, and the Riders went on a fourth-quarter run that eventually tied the game at 54 with just more than a minute left in regulation.

“We were in it physically, we were in it emotionally and we were in it mentally,” said Shuring, “and then we got into a situation where I think we got comfortable and thought the game was in the hand, and they made a great comeback.” Read More

Couple of Wins for Okaw Valley Timberwolves Team

The Okaw Valley boys’ basketball team picked up two more wins this week.

The Timberwolves defeated St. Elmo/Brownstown in the Little Okaw Valley Conference Shootout Saturday and Cerro Gordo/Bement in a regular-season LOVC matchup Friday.

Against St. Elmo/Brownstown, the Timberwolves had to come back from a 13-point deficit to defeat the Eagles 55-53.

The Timberwolves came back with a 14-0 run that started in the second period and ended when Conner Cloyd hit s 3-pointer to take the lead with 5:03 left in the third.

Jared Bunfill hit a 3-pointer to take the permanent lead. Bunfill finished with 11 points. Read More
