Moultrie-Douglas Farm Bureau Accepting Shuman Applicants

The Moultrie County Farm Bureau is once again accepting applications for the Charles B. Shuman Memorial Scholarship. This will be the 17th year for the scholarship honoring the achievements and life of Charles Shuman.

The $500 scholarship will be awarded to a resident of Moultrie County who is a graduating high school senior or is currently enrolled in a university or community college. The successful applicant should be of good moral character and exhibit potential for successful completion of a course of study in agriculture or related fields. In addition to academic performance, extra-curricular and community involvement will also be considered in the selection process. Contact the MCFB office at 217-728-4214 to obtain an application. “Learn to Draw Faces! Workshop Offered in Mattoon

Kari Rajkumar, an award-winning artist from Paris, is scheduled to teach a “Learn to Draw Faces!” Workshop at the Mattoon Arts Council located in the historic Mattoon Train Depot, 1718 Broadway Avenue in Mattoon.

Rajkumar, who is primarily self-taught, is known for her highly detailed portraits in graphite, pastel, and oils. Her work has received top honors in numerous regional, national, and international competitions and has also appeared in such notable publications as the Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine, and the Pastel Journal. Learn How to Set up a Bee Hive

A one day class on how to set up a bee hive will be 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Feb 18 in the Arthur United Methodist Church, located at 128 E Illinois. The cost for a family includes handout material and a year’s membership in the Arthur Beekeepers.

Singing Valentines

On Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, February 14, people who live in and around the Sullivan, Arthur area may receive a singing Valentine.  A quartet will sing two love songs at homes, businesses or schools, deliver a box of candy and a beautiful card.  They will also take a photo of the event for the recipient.  All the proceeds go to the vocal music programs at area high schools.  Call Bruce Condill (841-7281) to schedule an appointment for a Singing Valentine. Secretary of State Offices

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that all offices and facilities open Monday to Friday will be closed Monday, February 13, while facilities open Tuesday to Saturday will be closed Saturday, February 11, in observance of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.

All Driver Services facilities will be open for business Tuesday, February 14.

Bethany Legion Ready for Texas Hold’em

American Legion Post 507 in Bethany will host its 12th Poker Tournament Fundraiser Saturday, February 25.

The event will benefit students at Okaw Valley High School through academic scholarships awarded annually.

The Texas Hold’em poker tournament starts at noon and has limited seating so early registration is advised. Pork burgers and refreshments will be available for purchase at the event.

Take Down Heart Disease Features Ben Booker

Fitness Guru Ben Booker of Sullivan is the featured speaker at Sarah Bush Lincoln’s men’s only free event, “Take Down Heart Disease,” set for 5-7 pm, Thursday, Feb. 23, in the Brick House Bar and Grill in Charleston.

Take Down Heart Disease will give attendees the opportunity to learn about the importance of physical fitness and staying active to help prevent heart disease. Also speaking will be Prairie Heart Cardiologist Michael LaMonto, DO, who will talk about risk factors of heart health. A variety of Sarah Bush Lincoln health professionals will be on hand to answer questions about fitness, tobacco cessation, Heart to Heart screening program, weight management, sleep disorders and diabetes.

Booker transformed his body from ordinary to chiseled and graced the covers for multiple fitness magazines becoming a fitness model and spokesperson. He lives a “second chance” lifestyle and talks about how bodybuilding saved his physique, his marriage and his life.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, which means that one in four people will have heart disease. The best way to cure heart disease is to prevent it by addressing risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and changing behaviors including tobacco and alcohol use, diet, and physical inactivity/obesity.  Read More

Sign collision at Agri-Fab

In the late afternoon of Saturday, May 31st, there was a single-vehicle accident, with the vehicle making contact with the Sullivan Agri-Fab factory signage located at the factory frontage on Hamilton Street. Per Sullivan Police Department’s Chief of Police, Andrew Pistorius, the airbag was deployed in the incident, and the driver refused medical treatment. No further information is available at this time.
