District #305 Foundation Holds Raffle

District #305 Education Foundation is sponsoring an Inaugural Reverse Raffle at the Lovington American Legion Hall Saturday, March 18.

In this all tickets draw, last ticket drawn raffle a $1500 grand prize is awarded. All the proceeds will benefit the District #305 Education Foundation.

There are only 100 tickets sold at $50 each. Included in the ticket price is one pork chop dinner.

Tickets may be purchased from any foundation member or by contacting Shelley Martina at 855-4953.

After the first $50 winning ticket is drawn, $50 will be awarded every 10th ticket winner up to 80.

The last five out may split the first prize only if all remaining ticket holders agree to do so.

Ticket holders need not be present to win. For those planning not to attend it will be assumed the ticket holder will split unless otherwise noted.

Oblong Shots Fall in for Win over Knights

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond boys’ basketball team dropped a Little Okaw Valley Conference home game to Oblong Friday night.

Oblong doubled the Knights’ first quarter scoring, 12-6, but ALAH hung in the game, keeping the deficit to less than double digits heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter though, Oblong outscored the Knights 24-11 to put the game out of reach for the eventual 60-38 win.

A major difference in the game was shooting percentage.  Read More

Blue Dolphins Compete in Xtreme Meet

The Sullivan Blue Dolphins Swim Club made a big splash competing in the COHO IMX Winter Invitation held in Deerfield Dec 3 and 4. USA Swimming has established the Individual Medley Xtreme (IMX) Challenge as a method of motivating swimmers to develop their full potential by increased participation in distance events.

The IMX series features five or six events that are at longer distances than most meets. Once a swimmer has completed the IMX program they earn “powerpoints”, which may be compared to other swimmers from around the country.

Highlights for our nine-and-unders include Johnathan Iacobazzi, fifth of 23 (1140.29 pts) and Kaiden Smith, 22nd out of 23 with (38.50 pts).  Read More

Donnabelle Frazier, 85, of Sullivan, died 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2017 in Mason Point in Sullivan.

Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in French Cemetery in Allenville with Bob Vail officiating. Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan handled arrangements. Read More

Redskins’ Varsity Start Strong Against Warriors

The Sullivan boys’ varsity basketball team dropped its Central Illinois Conference opener 50-46 when it traveled to Tuscola Friday night.

“(We) played three really good quarters,” said Sullivan coach Chester Reeder. “Unfortunately, we play basketball and not hockey.”

Sullivan jumped out to a 19-10 first-quarter lead, but Tuscola battled back in the second quarter to take the lead 26-23 at half.

The Warriors extended that lead to six heading into the fourth quarter. Read More

Alson J. Kelly, 76, of Effingham, formerly of Bethany and Dalton City, died at 5 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2017 in Effingham.

Celebration of Life services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan with Rick Catt officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today (Wednesday). Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bethany.  Read More

There is an error in  the Bethany library story in the January 4  issue of the News Progress.  It is the collection of yearbooks that have been digitalized - not the class pictures.  Any Bethany high school graduate may now go to the website and view their yearbook. We regret the error.

Okaw Valley Girls Score Double Wins

The Okaw Valley girls’ basketball team took care of two more non-conference teams Thursday and Monday.

Thursday, the Timberwolves knocked off Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 63-52 with a balanced offensive attack.

OV took an early 10-point lead in the first quarter and kept that lead through the rest of the game.

Windsor cut the lead to 48-40 in the third quarter but couldn’t come any closer. Read More

Sign collision at Agri-Fab

In the late afternoon of Saturday, May 31st, there was a single-vehicle accident, with the vehicle making contact with the Sullivan Agri-Fab factory signage located at the factory frontage on Hamilton Street. Per Sullivan Police Department’s Chief of Police, Andrew Pistorius, the airbag was deployed in the incident, and the driver refused medical treatment. No further information is available at this time.
