Sullivan Senior Expo to be held in September

It’s almost that time of year-the annual Mid Illinois Senior Services Expo will be held on September 25th, with 2 expo times this year: 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., and 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., with the doors opening at 9:00 a.m. The event will be held in their new location at 113 Jefferson Street, Sullivan, and is a day to celebrate and empower seniors. 

Take-out only lunch will be provided by Griffins BBQ and catering, donated by Agrifab and Hydro-gear. Prepare for an informative expo session with friends, local businesses, learn new information, gifts, and a free lunch. To register or if you have any questions, call (217) 728.8521, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. All planning to attend must register by Friday, September 13th, at 3:30 p.m.

What started as a simple summer project turned into a heartwarming act of kindness thanks to the creative and compassionate Summer Squad kids at Empower Academy. During their recent “Pay it Forward” week, the school-aged group set up a cheerful lemonade stand with one goal in mind: to make someone’s special day even brighter.

Wade celebrates 1 year with HICF

August 1st marked one year since Grant Wade joined the Heart of Illinois Foundation team as their Moultrie County philanthropic advisor. Grant launched HICF’s outreach to Moultrie County and brings his community knowledge to all HICF initiatives and grant-making. Grant shows up to help others in many ways. His dedication, creativity, and positive energy have made a lasting impact and a meaningful difference within the HICF and the communities it serves.

‘Warrior Wheels’ Jeep run

On September 6th at the Sullivan VFW, the “Warrior Wheels” fundraiser for the Warrior Fund will hold their ‘Warrior Wheels’ Jeep run.  Sign-up begins at 10:015 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. The registration fee is $10.00 per person. Departure will be at noon from the Sullivan VFW. All vehicles welcome, but Jeeps will take the lead. 

The run begins at the Sullivan VFW and includes the Shelbyville VFW, Bethany American Legion, and Lovington American Legion, with the end of the run being the return to the Sullivan VFW.  Food will be available at the stops for purchase or donation, depending on location, including BBQ sandwiches, a taco bar, chips, and cookies. Donations are encouraged. There will be meat boards and a 50/50 raffle. All donations will go to the Warrior fund.

“Back to School Bash

On August 9th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Jonathan Creek Christian Church will be hosting a “Back to School Bash” at 1425 Jonathan Creek Road in Sullivan. There will be bounce houses, activities, water games, and a lunch will be served as well. This event is open to the public and free for everyone to attend. Growth comes at a cost for City Council

An ambitious plan to add 100 new housing units in ten years to Sullivan is coming along ahead of schedule, but at an added cost to the city’s utilities. During an extended discussion about economic development, the council discussed the costs of additional electric, water, and gas meters for new construction. “Lots of communities our size and bigger would like to have what we have,’ said Mayor Mike Mossman.

Primary Election candidate petitions available

Nominating petitions for candidates planning to run in the March 17, 2026, General Primary Election will be available in Moultrie County Clerk Linda Qualls’ office beginning Tuesday, August 5, 2025. This is also the first day to circulate nomination documents for candidates of established political parties and independent candidates.  

Monday, October 27, 2025, through Monday, November 3, 2025, candidates can file original nomination documents with the County Clerk’s Office. Office hours are Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On the last day of filing, November 3, 2025, office hours will be extended to 5:00 p.m.

The county-wide offices up for nomination are full terms for County Clerk & Recorder, Sheriff, Treasurer, and four-year terms for County Board members with five seats available. Precinct Committeemen will be elected during the primary as well.

Peace Meal helps boost the nutritional health of older adults by providing healthy pre-cooked meals, conducting nutrition assessments and education, and sharing food safety instructions.

1 - Marinated pork loins, mashed sweet potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, broccoli salad, and roll/bread

4 - Pork burger/bun, German potato salad, baked beans, and fruit.

5 - Ham and beans, copper carrots, pineapple, cornbread, and dessert.

6 - Meatloaf, sour cream/chive mashed potatoes, carrots, tomato salad, and roll.

7 - Chicken salad sandwich, tomato basil soup, tangy coleslaw, and fruit dessert.

1st - Kids Craft Time from 3:30-4:30 p.m. We will be making a rolled paper apple craft. 

4th & 18th - Needle Night from 5-7 p.m. If you would like to learn to crochet, knit, needlepoint, or sew, we have people who can help teach you. If you already know how and just want to hang out, come join us. 

5th - Story Time from 10:00-10:30 a.m. & 3:00-3:30 p.m.

11th - Adult Craft Club from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. Bring whatever project you are working on and join us for the fun.

12th - Tyke Time from 10:00-10:30 a.m. and 3:00-3:30 p.m.

15th - Teen Craft Time from 3:30-4:30 p.m. We will be making a sunflower.
