State Sen. Dale Righter (R-Mattoon) voted in support of Senate Bill 2039 Dec. 7, legislation that releases the state’s portion of the motor fuel tax (MFT) money and includes funding for 911 call centers, fire prevention, veterans’ homes, lottery winners, payment of utility bills, and other programs..
“With the winter season upon us, it’s imperative our local governments have this funding so they can purchase enough road salt and fix roadways so our citizens remain safe,” Righter said. “This bi-partisan compromise is a step toward ultimately fixing our state’s finances, passing a balanced budget, and moving Illinois forward.” Read More

What better time to give away a free furnace than winter?
Atteberry and Marshall Heating of Allenville is taking that a step further. They are giving away a free furnace, complete with installation, and the winner is announced Christmas Day.
“We have grown over the past two years and would like to give something back to the community,” office manager Sara Bendler said of the idea to give a furnace to someone in need.
“In October we were able to raise $1125 for breast cancer awareness,” Bendler said, noting they were talking about ways to give back to the community for the holidays when the furnace giveaway idea came up.
“Our technician Mark Stabler gets to see furnaces in different conditions every day, and he thought this would be a good way to help out,” Bendler continued, noting they partnered with Amana on the $3500 furnace and installation giveaway. Read More

To paraphrase Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, we should not let a good bicentennial go to waste. But we may.
The Prairie State celebrates its 200th birthday in 2018, which is like the day before yesterday in planning terms, according to Perry Hammock, executive director of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission. The Hoosier State celebrates its milestone in 2016, and state leaders have been hard at work on it since 2011.
Almost two years ago, former Illinois governor Pat Quinn appointed a bicentennial commission that includes former governor Jim Thompson and other distinguished Illinoisans. But the group has never met, and with the ongoing budget stalemate and abundant political conflict affecting the state, any commission action and funding for its work are uncertain at best.
We have to get cracking on this, and it looks as though it will require private efforts to get matters off the ground.
The Indiana commission has been meeting regularly for four years. The state has committed $28 million for bicentennial projects, and a staff of four plus many college-graduate interns has stimulated upwards of 800 “legacy projects” across just about every city and hamlet in that state.
Every Indiana county has a volunteer coordinator. The commission’s website receives more than one million impressions a month and, says Hammock, “We’ve got the buzz going across the state.” Read More
