Perkinson Art Gallery Features Iannelli Book and Exhibit

News Progress Posted on September 16, 2015 by webmasterSeptember 16, 2015

•September 16, 2015•

Perkinson Art Gallery in Kirkland Fine Arts Center will showcase an exhibition of groundbreaking industrial designs of the Iannelli Studios through Saturday, Oct. 24. The exhibition is part of a book collaboration between Millikin University’s Bronze Man Books and author David Jameson, owner of ArchiTech Gallery of Architectural Art in Chicago, Ill. The book is entitled “Everyday Modern: The Industrial Design of Alfonso Iannelli.”

Alfonso Iannelli is most famous for his sculptural work commissioned by architect Frank Lloyd Wright for the Midway Gardens project in Chicago in 1914. Iannelli Studios maintained a long and illustrious business in industrial design throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s, including contract design work for the Mueller Company in Decatur, Ill.

The exhibition will include original drawings, documents, blue prints, photographs and objects related to the industrial designs of the Iannelli Studios for companies such as Oster, Parker Pens and Wahl Eversharp. These unique artifacts are loaned from major Chicago collections.

Millikin Art Department and Bronze Man Books students were actively engaged in the editing, design and production process for both the book and the exhibit. Students have worked closely with Ed Walker, Millikin associate professor of art, and Dr. Randy Brooks, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Millikin, as well as Millikin alumnus Eric O’Malley ‘97. O’Malley has been instrumental in securing the connection with David Jameson as well as other collectors of Iannelli’s work in the Chicago area. Read More

Open House Friday

Fifty years of Sullivan Blue Dolphin swimmers have trained at the Civic Center, and this Friday, September 18 an open house commemorates the occasion.

Everyone is invited to the Sullivan Civic Center from 4-7 p.m. Friday to help the Blue Dolphins celebrate their Golden Anniversary.

Swimming heritage started the day the doors opened at the Civic Center with 525 splashing in the Olympic sized pool.

When Charles Smith came in as director, the school district allowed students to receive swimming lessons. This led to the eventual birth of a competitive swim team.

Early competitions involved surrounding counties and included Olympic swimmer Lynn Alsup of Bloomington.

By 1974 Steve Ludwig reorganized the team into the Blue Dolphins.

Now, as in the beginning, the city of Sullivan has supported the swim team providing them a free pass for all practices and competitions.

Blue Dolphins coach Jason Drury is a Sullivan native who swam for the team in the 1980s.

He was among the first Blue Dolphins to compete at the state level.

Drury has been with the Blue Dolphins for the past 10 years, building it from 20 to 80 swimmers.

“Swimming is a progression,” he told Joash Tiarks in August. “In the early years, it does not matter how fast you are…using the correct form and stroke is the key.” Read More
