Understanding Illinois: Learning How Things Work in Aurora

News Progress Posted on July 15, 2015 by webmasterJuly 15, 2015
Nowlan•July 15, 2015•

By Jim Nowlan
NP Guest Columnist

I have long lamented that I don’t know how things work—electricity, telephone, computers, Internet. Guess I was never stimulated into such discoveries by my science teacher, who himself probably didn’t know how things worked.
This past week, however, I visited a path-breaking new public elementary school that is all about learning how things work. I had been told about the place by an impressed educator friend who said, “Nowlan, you gotta see this place.”
The John Dunham STEM Partnership School is located on the campus of Aurora University, in the rustbelt city of same name on the western edge of Chicagoland. For 200 3rd to 8th graders from surrounding, often gritty public schools, the school is devoted full-time to exciting youngsters about science, technology, engineering and math. Read More

Treasurer Frerichs Partners with Credit Unions to Help People During Budget Impasse

News Progress Posted on July 15, 2015 by webmasterJuly 15, 2015
•July 15, 2015•

Interest-free loans will be available to state workers if the budget impasse means payroll checks will not be issued beginning July 15, Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs said today.
The loans will be issued through participating credit unions with money made available through the Treasurer’s Office linked-deposit program. Linked deposits provide financial institutions money for specific loan programs.
“The Treasurer’s Office uses tools to help our residents achieve more, such as saving for college, investing in a business, or planning for retirement,” Frerichs said. “This linked-deposit program is a tool that provides short-term loans for workers while the Governor and General Assembly resolve their differences.”
The state’s fiscal year ended June 30. The absence of a budget agreement means the state does not have the authority to pay certain bills, such as wages to some state employees. Read More

Mo-Do Baseball Takes Two in District Preview

News Progress Posted on July 15, 2015 by webmasterJuly 15, 2015

Now prepare for district tournament

•July 15, 2015•

By Matt Kracht
NP Sports Reporter

Moultrie-Douglas County American Legion baseball swept a double header against rival Shelby County winning 9-4 and 9-5 in a Sunday matinée hosted by Windsor.
The stifling heat was shrugged off by both squads with Legion Post 479 racking up 18 total runs in back to back come from behind wins.
Mo-Do jr. legion head coach Duff Hoel knew that his team was facing a tough opponent going into the contest.
“We told the kids before the game that we were facing a good pitcher who is from Windsor originally and is pitching in college right now. So he is going to try and get ahead of you early so look for the fastball and shoot it the other way because he is going to have some velocity. Dylan Hart started us off with a big home run. That was nice since we were down two to nothing before Dylan hit a ball into the trees in right field. That got us going and the other guys picked it up behind him.” Read More
