A 24-year old man was arrested after he allegedly stabbed his father at a home in Lovington Sunday night.
Matthew Archer-Newberry, 24, of Lovington was arrested after he stabbed his father Randy Newberry, 54, twice according to a probable cause affidavit by Lovington police officer Jay Clark.
The affidavit explains that Randy Newberry was transported to St. Mary’s hospital for a stab wound to the chest and cuts to his left arm. According to Clark’s statements, Newberry told the Lovington officer that he and his son Matthew were watching television prior to the incident. Archer-Newberry then allegedly went to the kitchen and returned with a knife, which he shoved into the upper left chest area of Randy Newberry. After managing to stand up from the recliner he was in, the 54-year-old was then stabbed again in his left inner forearm. Read More

She passed away Sunday, June 21, 2015, in the Arthur Home in Arthur.

Four area residents recently attended an Action Day in Springfield for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
Jean Landers, Shirley Cochran, Nylene Hughes and Deb Groendal, Executive Director of the Mid-Illinois Senior Service of Sullivan attended the Action Day on May 26 sponsored by the Illinois Association of Community Action Agencies (IACAA).
The day started with a rally at the Statehouse Inn followed by a march to the Capitol where participants were able to meet with legislators and their staff to enlist their support of the LIHEAP program. Of particular concern for the group is Governor Rauner’s current plan to suspend the State Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (SLHEAP) as of July 1. This move would leave only federal funds available for the operation of the program and lead to reductions in the number of households local LIHEAP agencies will be able to assist. Read More

Thinking About Health: If You Knew How Many Calories in That Sandwich, Would You Still Eat It?

Not long ago my husband showed up with a sandwich for lunch that he bought at a local supermarket. I thought it was going to be our usual: turkey and provolone with lettuce on a hard roll, always plenty for both of us.  At $6.50, how could you go wrong?
This time the sandwich was different. It now cost $9.50 and was piled high with turkey and cheese on a roll that was much bigger than what we were used to. In short, it was awful—enough meat and cheese for four people on squishy bread that tasted more like a morning sweet roll. But the bigger serving probably looked like a good deal to a lot of people who thought only about size relative to cost and nothing about size or cost relative to calories.
After surgery on the sandwich, the two of us ate some of it and saved slices of the meat and cheese for later. My guess is most buyers would have eaten the whole thing believing they were getting great value for the money.  Maybe they were, but they were also getting at least half the calories most of them needed for the day. Moultrie County Real Estate Tax Bills Mailed

Moultrie County real estate taxes were mailed June 19. The first installment is due July 22, and the second installment is due September 3.
The public is encouraged to look over their tax bills and make sure all of the information is correct, including the back of the tax bill. It is the responsibility of the property owner to report all address changes to the assessor’s office at 728-4951. Assessment and exemption questions should be directed to the Supervisor of Assessments office. Read More

By heavy demand, a Sullivan favorite re-emerges

Last Thursday just before 3:45 a.m. Drew Zbinden walked a block west to 112 East Harrison and began making doughnuts.
But not just any ordinary doughnuts.
Sullivan Bakery doughnuts–and 40 dozen of them.
The bakery then flipped round its open sign at 5:30 a.m.
Two hours later, all 480 of the cake and round yeast-raised rings, 96 of which were glazed, were gone.
Not to worry right? The bakery still had cookies, brownies, and six dozen muffins.
Gone.
In fact, if you walked into the newly opened bakery Thursday after 9 a.m., it appeared as though they hadn’t opened at all as their three pastry cases sat empty.
Still unbeknownst to the public the mad rush earlier that morning, patron after willing patron continued to come to the bakery in anticipation of a morning pastry.
“You’re only about three hours too late,” said Jerry Risley, Drew’s father and part owner.
“How about 5:30 a.m. tomorrow?” said JoBeth Risley, Drew’s mother (also part owner).

ALAH School Newspaper Receives Grant

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond High School newspaper staff recently received a $1500 grant from the Illinois Press Foundation to purchase cameras.
“I was able to purchase two Canon Rebel SLR cameras complete with tripods, lenses, and carrying cases with the grant,” adviser Zach Freed said. “It has really helped our staff to get better pictures more easily. Before the grant we were scrambling to find a camera to photograph activities. Now we just grab one of these digital cameras.” Read More
