Illinois Conservation Police officers – in observance of National Safe Boating Week – are reminding boat operators and passengers to wear life jackets and stay sober while on the water this boating season.
“As we head into our busy summer boating season in Illinois, we are reminding everyone who enjoys time on the water to make safety their first consideration,” said Illinois Conservation Police Chief Rafael Gutierrez. “Our message is pretty simple and straightforward: Fastening a life jacket can save your life, and staying sober while operating a boat is not only common sense, it’s the law.” Read More

Tuesday evening’s regional semi-final between no. 2 seed and host Sullivan and no. 3 seed Shelbyville saw plenty of back-and-forth momentum that finally ended with a double play in the top of the seventh, earning the Lady Redskins their second straight regional championship appearance.
After taking an early 1-0 lead, Sullivan found themselves down 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
There, the Lady Red strung together six hits for four runs, including a double to deep left field by Heidi Clements to tie the game at 5-5 before Makenzie Ruppert tripled to deep left field to put Sullivan on top 6-5–a lead they would not give up. Seleste Smith then followed with a single RBI up the middle to put Sullivan ahead 7-5. Read More

Waggoner Family and Descendants Finally Reunite

News Progress Posted on May 20, 2015 by webmasterMay 20, 2015

First mass reunion is held in over 80 years

May 20, 2015

by Joash Tiarks
Reporting in Sullivan

With the Memorial Day holiday being celebrated this coming Monday, many families will take the extra day off from school and work to get together, enjoy a cookout perhaps, and typically visit the sites where those family members who served in the armed services are laid to rest.
For the local Waggoner family, this would mean visiting Whitfield Cemetery where Isaac Waggoner lies next to his wife Emsey, having served in the Revolutionary War. Many members of the family were able to do just that and to pay their respects earlier in the month as part of a two-day family reunion that brought in more than 140 people from at least nine states. McClain perfect in outing

May 20, 2015

By Matt Kracht
NP Sports Reporter

The Timberwolves looked like a number one seed Tuesday night in the second round of the class 1A Windsor/Stew-Stras Regional. Amanda McClain was perfect through four frames striking out nine in a five inning no hitter. Okaw Valley will face the winner of Windsor/Stew-Stras and Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Friday in the championship.
A dialed in OV lineup tallied 11 runs in the first two innings with McClain setting the tone by stealing home for the initial run in the bottom of the first. Paige Harlin followed with a two run double to centerfield giving the Timberwolves a 3-0 advantage. Maddie Perrine then capped the inning with a two-run double from the nine hole spotting McClain a six run lead. Timberwolves head coach Dave Benning thought his team fed off each other’s success.
“Hitting is contagious when you are hitting line drives. The confidence builds up and down the lineup. We scored six in the first. It was just a matter of getting on top of this team early and continuing to build momentum. I am very pleased with how we hit the ball today–not just flaring balls out there but hitting with a vengeance.” Read More

Plans to improve sewer system on northwest side

May 20, 2015

by Ariana Cherry
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Before the regular meeting of the Sullivan city council last Monday evening, a public hearing concerning a grant from the State Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program for which it intends to apply was held.
It is funded by Title I of the Federal Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. If the city is approved for the grant, the funds will be used to improve the sanitary sewer system in the northwest part of town. Most of the work would be done throughout the neighborhoods rather than the sewer plant. The total amount that has been requested is $450,000. It wasn’t until October of last year when the city discovered that it hadn’t been approved for this same grant for which they had applied previously. The city is assuming that there will be a similar time frame this year. Last year, Sullivan received an unrelated CDAP (Community Development Assistance Program) Grant of $100,000 to fix the sewer system on Monroe Street. Read More
