Luminaria Ceremony at Relay for Life June 13

May 13, 2015

A special Luminaria Ceremony held during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Moultrie County remembers those lost to cancer and honors those who have survived. Luminarias will be lit at Wyman Park on June 13 to represent these individuals.
Anyone desiring to purchase a luminaria at $10 may do so by contacting Alicia Pettyjohn at 217-356-4861.
“Seeing the candles twinkle against the water at the park and knowing what each light represents is a sight and a feeling that moves you. It’s not really an event; it’s a point in time when everything stands still, and the only thing we feel is love, the breeze, and the beats of our hearts.” said Jamie Crosier, Relay Chairperson. “We hope to sell enough to light the entire area.” Read More

Will begin regional play next week

The Sullivan Redskins secured the CIC(Central Illinois Conference) inaugural championship Thursday at Leon Lane Memorial Field thanks to a strong pitching performance by Jacob Piper, who went five innings of shutout baseball, ultimately allowing just two runs on two hits over the complete game. Sullivan ran its way to a lead early and held off a sixth inning rally to claim the program’s first conference title in more than 15 years.
Celebrating with his team after the win, head coach Troy Rogers gave all the credit to his players. “These are a great group of kids who played a lot of baseball over the years, and I couldn’t be more proud of them. They deserve it.”
Rogers also complimented Piper who was starting just his second game on the season.
“He had just had some relief appearances, and he is 2-0 now after starting last weekend versus Okaw Valley. I know he is going to throw strikes, keep them off balance, and let his defense work. We have been playing solid defense behind him. We had one hiccup where we gave Clinton a couple extra outs, but Jacob did a good job getting out of it, keeping that four run cushion.” Read More

Mother/daughter from Bethany each suffer from Lyme Disease

May 13, 2015

Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Mothers and daughters hope to share many parts of their lives together as they grow older. That may include dances, weddings or even children. But one thing that mothers and daughters hope not to share - is battling the same disease.
Christina Wise has had Lyme Disease for at least 20 to 25 years. The doctors believe she contracted the disease between the age of five to seven years old. Her mother Karen Allen was diagnosed in November of 2014 after experiencing chronic fatigue and major joint pain in her knees, hips and elbows. Since then, the two have been battling the disease together.
“It’s unknown how I contracted it. I was probably five to seven years old. We don’t ever remember a tick biting me, and I never had the bulls eye rash, (a rash that gradually spreads over about 12 inches as part of it clears -appearing like a “bull’s-eye” -CDC.gov) but we went camping and fishing all the time. We were constantly outdoors,” noted Wise. “My mom asked me to get tested. I always had a bad immune system, but we never thought I was ever this sick and that there was a reason for my sickness,” she added. After having a Western Blot Test, (a test done that confirms the diagnosis and detects antibodies), it was confirmed that Wise had Lyme Disease. Read More

Crop Insurance Deadline Near for Ill. Producers

News Progress Posted on May 13, 2015 by webmasterMay 14, 2015
May 13, 2015

The USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) reminds producers in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio that they need to have their Highly Erodible Conservation and Wetland Conservation Certification form (AD-1026) on file with their local USDA service center by June 1. The 2014 Farm Bill required all producers have the form on file by the June 1 deadline to become or remain eligible for crop insurance premium support.
“Most producers have an AD-1026 certification form on file, however, some specialty crop, nursery, even some corn and soybean producers may not. Those with catastrophic coverage (CAT) may not realize that if they don’t comply with the Conservation Compliance provisions, they will be responsible for the full premium,” said Brian Frieden, director, Springfield Regional Office. “We have taken many steps recently to broaden participation in the crop insurance program as part of the farm safety net, including offering new policies such as the Whole-Farm Revenue Protection, Supplemental Coverage Option, and extending organic price elections to many new crops.” Read More
