Pratt’s walk-off in the fifth brings early ending

With the wind howling out to left field, Sullivan softball muscled up to defeat St. Anthony by 10 runs in just five innings on Tuesday night.
Crooked numbers were key as the Lady Redskins scored four runs in the first, three in the second, and three more in the fourth all topped by a Bailee Pratt walk-off winner in the fifth. Heidi Clements got the start and the win for the now 10-6 squad, holding St. Anthony’s talented offense in check by trusting her defense.
Head coach Ben Richter thinks his team’s patient approach at the plate is paying dividends.
“I have been having them take pitches and try to work counts,” he said. “We have been swinging on the first pitch and that had been getting us in trouble. They did a great job seeing pitches and finding the pitches they want to hit. We jumped on a couple and they landed where we wanted them to land. So it was a good day offensively.” Read More

Last ditch heroics push Sullivan past Altamont Sat.

April 22, 2015

By Matt Kracht
NP Sports Reporter

Sullivan rallied from behind to win in dramatic fashion against the Altamont Indians Saturday at Leon Lane Memorial Field.
Nick Frerichs came up with a clutch two-out two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Levi Nadler followed with an RBI single down the right field line for the game winner. The Redskins called on Tom Schibur to close out the final two innings, earning his first win supported by Dakota Clayton who pitched five strong innings of three run ball tallying five strikeouts.
Playing their fifth game in five days, Redskins head coach Troy Rogers saw what he called a gutsy performance.
“Our pitching staff is running on fumes,” he said. “This is only Tommy’s second time pitching varsity. He has pitched really well so far, and if we were not as deep as we are, he would be pitching for us a lot. He has been able to get a lot of innings in JV, but that was the first time I had seen him in a prolonged outing, and I was impressed.” Read More

When it came to making the decision to take over The Flower Pot, new owners and mother/daughter team Lesa McDaniel and Kimberlie Elkins (of Mackinaw, Ill.) didn’t have to go out on a limb. With Elkins already having experience running a store and McDaniel’s motivation, the idea to take over the business was already planted firmly in both of their minds.
“My husband and I are friends with Mike and Ellen (Bernius). When I had first heard she was going to retire, I told my husband that I would love to run it and have my mother move down here to run it with me,” said McDaniel. “I had been a stay-at-home mom over the last 10 years and was ready to have a career. I was also given the opportunity to come in before Ellen closed, and she taught me how to make a proper arrangement and showed me what I needed to know.
“My mother had a store up in Mackinaw and loved what she did so I thought it would be a lot of fun to work with my mom. I got a hold of Ellen, and here we are. I am very grateful that we were given the chance to keep the business going!” Read More
