Understanding Illinois: Body Cameras Put All On Best Behavior

News Progress Posted on April 15, 2015 by webmasterApril 15, 2015

By Jim Nowlan
Outside Columnist

Recent high-profile police shootings have put local law enforcement across the country under scrutiny. Will body cameras on police provide, as some experts think, a high-tech tool to improve behavior by both police and suspects, and thus de-escalate tensions over time?
The Economist, a highly respected United Kingdom weekly, offers trenchant analysis of American society by thoughtful outsiders. In December, the magazine excoriated U.S. policing for excessive use of force.
The publication noted that police in the U.S. shot and killed at least 458 people last year. In contrast, English “bobbies” felled no one in the period.
The Economist admitted that many American police operate in a violent world. Forty-six policemen were shot dead in the past year, and 52,000 were assaulted.
Policing has changed dramatically since I was a youngster in the 1950s.
In my rural county of Stark, for example, we then had simply a sheriff and his deputy; the deputy lived in the jail, and his wife cooked for the inmates. Read More

SOV boys take 11th

Competing in the annual Arthur Invite, the host’s girls finished second, the boys third, while SOV’s boys took 11th.
The Redskins’ best finish was junior Zane Uphoff’s third place in the triple jump, going 40 feet, 6 1/4 inches. He would also earn seventh in the long jump (18-10).
"Well, obviously Uphoff has been jumping pretty well and has become more consistent this season," said SOV boys' head coach John Bertetto. "He had another PR on Friday night.  We are just going to keep working to where he will hopefully have a shot at state at the end of this season."
Other top 10 finishes included Calen Landrus (9th-100m dash, 11.43 seconds), Blake Stewart (5th-200m dash, 24.11), J.T. Bland (10th-1600m run, 5:09.06), Nick Cravatta (9th-3200m run, 11:57.94), Zach Devore (9th-300m hurdles, 46.83), Ross Metzger (5th-triple jump, 39-0), the 4x100 relay (7th-48.82), 4x200 relay (4th-1:38.55), and the 4x800 relay (5th-9:54.47).
"Our kids competed pretty well on Friday night, but I was hoping we would finish with a higher team score, and we may have except for a hiccup with our 4X400m team, because they would have likely placed pretty high," said Bertetto. "We are getting more competitive, but we still have a ways to go to get where we want to be in our program. We have quite a bit of young talent that will hopefully keep improving throughout this season." Read More

Sullivan survived a scare from Windsor/Stew-Stras on the road Saturday. The Lady Redskins jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, but Windsor battled back to within one run at 8-7 in the sixth inning. Sullivan starter Heidi Clements had an all-conference kind of day going 3-for-5 from the plate knocking in two RBI and sealing the win from the mound. After the win, head coach Ben Richter complimented his starter’s all-around game.
“I can’t say enough good things about Heidi. She always does a great job throwing strikes and making them put the ball in play. As our number three hitter, that is what we expect out of her. She has been doing it all year and is one of the team leaders.” Read More
