We had a special, fictional character in one of our science textbooks in the Sullivan grade schools. I’m not sure now in which grade that particular textbook was used, but the character’s name was Cowboy Hal. Hal taught us the graduation in degrees on the Fahrenheit thermometer and the temperature at which water would boil at sea level. He introduced us to the power of the steam created when water was boiled and how it was used to power steam engines on ships and train locomotives. Other lessons included the polarization of magnets; how like poles resisted while opposite poles attracted. Cowboy Hal knew the names of all the constellations and where to look for them in the night sky; what a guy! I can still find the Big and Little Dippers, and the North Star. Read More

The same poll of 1,450 respondents found that almost half (49.5 percent) consider Illinois a poor place to live, versus only 26 percent who think it a good place.
And almost half (47 percent) think their quality of life has become worse in the past five years, with only 11 percent feeling it has become better.

Okaw Valley’s 10th and final run Tuesday evening wasn’t the prettiest. After the Knights third error of the inning on the throwout at first allowed Joe Jeffers to reach base, freshman Connor Cloyd sprinted home. He would get there, too, but not before a less than graceful finish.
“I told him to get down, but I didn’t tell him to face plant,” said OV head coach Andrew Hagerman. “The face plant was his idea. I prefer for him to slide. That lightened up the dugout though.”
Not that there was much tension at that point. OV senior ace Devon Still cruised through most of the seven innings, racking up 13 strikeouts and allowing five walks and just one hit, which nearly, itself, was done away with by the solid infield defense.
The Knights lone hit came in the bottom of the third when Tyler Schuring, facing a 2-2 count, dropped a single into shallow centerfield to ruin Still’s bid at a no-hitter. Read More

Heidi Clements and Maddie Wall combined to throw a perfect game Monday evening against Neoga. Facing the minimum over five innings without allowing a runner to reach base, the pair peppered the strike zone and trusted the defense to have their backs. Making sure the strong pitching performance did not go to waste the Lady Redskins scored nine runs in the first inning, three runs in the second, seven in the third, and one more in the fourth for good measure. Head coach Ben Richter summed the performance up nicely after the win.
“It was perfect– a perfect game between the two of them,” he said. “No one on base. Maddie Wall came in and pitched well in the fourth and fifth innings, and Heidi Clements pitched great the first three.”
The offense for the Lady Redskins was keyed by a patient approach at the plate. Neoga’s starting pitcher struggled with command all day, and Sullivan took full advantage. A leadoff walk started off the first inning rally for Sullivan’s offense, and after a stolen base, an RBI double brought home the Redskins’ first run of the game. The carousel then took on a life of its own as 11 players came to bat in the bottom of the first. The Redskins scored four runs in the first on passed balls alone racking up five walks in the frame. Coach Richter commented that some of the patience came out of necessity. Read More
