Fifth, sixth innings the nightmare for ALAH

April 1, 2015

By Matt Kracht
NP Sports Reporter

The Knights lost their third straight game Monday against perennial contender Shelbyville. Ross Ryan pitched four innings of one run baseball before a three run fifth inning, including a two run homer, ended his day. Chris Davis finished off the game for the Knights but allowed four runs in the top of the sixth putting the game out of reach. The Knights have scored two runs combined in their home contests this season something head coach Craig Moffet chalks up to facing quality pitching. Moffet acknowledged the team, “needs to improve their approach at the plate, but that is something that will come along as the season progresses.” Read More

Understanding Illinois: Is High School Football Worth the Risk?

News Progress Posted on April 1, 2015 by webmasterApril 1, 2015

By Jim Nowlan
Outside Columnist

Talented linebacker Chris Borland called it quits this past week after just one year in the NFL. “I don’t think it’s worth the risk,” Borland told ESPN, referring to multiple concussions he has sustained. Several other NFL players have also retired this past year for similar reasons.
In Illinois, a class action law firm in Chicago has filed suit this year against the Illinois High School Association. The suit contends that the IHSA has failed in its responsibilities to provide adequate safety oversight for the 557 member high schools and their 47,000 football players.
The IHSA responds that if the suit is successful in requiring more and expensive medical oversight during practices and games, the death knell will probably be sounded for many small high school football programs. Read More

Public hearing to be held in May before vote

April 1, 2015

by Derek Pope
Bethany Reporter

Coming out of school board meetings in February and March, Okaw Valley’s administration has been focused on rolling out a tentative end-of-year budget that, according to superintendent Kent Stauder, would largely act as “the start of next year’s budget.” The process has not been without some difficulties though, Stauder explained to school board members during their most recent meeting. Since Governor Bruce Rauner took office in January of this year, school districts have faced numerous financial uncertainties in the wake of his efforts to make good on campaign promises of drastically cutting the state budget. Unearned runs compound in loss

April 1, 2015

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

The only thing louder than senior Brittin Boyer’s pre-game chant Tuesday were the four errors by the Lady Red against Tuscola, whether it be a missed flyout or a grounder getting underneath a glove. The errors and lack of hustle at times helped account for six of the Warriors 10 runs as Tuscola defeated Sullivan 10-3.
“I’ve got four earned runs on the day today for them. You can attribute it to spring break and not being up and doing something. You can attribute it to nerves, playing these guys for the first time. We know we’ve got them in the regional. We know we’re going to see them probably three times this year. We just didn’t come out focused,” said head coach Ben Richter. “That first inning, letting three runs in off little flare hits that we routinely make plays on and then the floodgates opened from there, and they just chipped away, chipped away with their bunts and moving people around. And they’re a good team. They had 13 hits to our seven. But whenever their hit that is a single turns into a double or a triple, because we’re not making plays on the ball, you’re not going to win games like that.” Read More
