The 2025 Department of Illinois Legion Membership Caravan will make a stop in the 19th District at the Sullivan American Legion, 8 E. Strain St., Sullivan, on January 15 at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served and National Vice Commander Roger Mathison will be the guest speaker.
The caravan is asking for new and renewed membership cards to be brought to the stop by all 19th District Legion, Auxiliary, S.A.L. and Legion Riders.

The Bethany Senior Citizen Potluck will be held on Wednesday, January 15 at 11 am at the Bethany library. Ham and Beans will be furnished. All are welcome.

The Moultrie County Childcare Committee announced the awarding of a substantial grant totaling $21,600 to Sullivan Preschool in acknowledgment of its exemplary commitment to providing exceptional childcare services in Moultrie County. This grant reflects the committee’s dedication to supporting and enhancing early childhood education within our community.
The Sullivan City Council agreed to helping the Sullivan Fire Department during their regular meeting on Monday, January 8.
The first item under new business was discussion and possible approval of a TIF agreement with the Sullivan Fire Protection District. The fire protection district has asked help to purchase a new truck. They asked for $40,000 a year for ten years out of TIF funds. Doug Shook said that fire trucks are important and that he would hate to lose a house in Cedar Dale or elsewhere. “If it can prevent one house fire I think it would be money well spent,” he said. The council agreed and approved the help.

The December meeting of the ALAH Board of Education was marked by a continued discussion on the referendum that had recently failed to pass. Community member Jeremy Hale voiced his disappointment at the outcome, emphasizing the community’s division and the urgent need to prioritize the children’s education and future.
“I am here to help, and I want success for us,” Hale began. “I’ve heard a lot of good and bad things here about this school. I am disappointed that not everyone is on the same page in this community. I don’t feel that everyone is putting our kids first,” he continued. I feel good about the growth of the referendum from both the first and second time. I feel there are still potential yes votes out there about the referendum and those who still haven’t been informed enough yet,” Hale went on. “We should all be on the same page when it comes to our kids. We shouldn’t be focusing on the building. All the other towns (Tuscola, Sullivan, etc) - they are all moving forward. We are stagnant…and keeping our kids stagnant. We’ve got to improve, rebuild, and we have to make it better for our kids and our future,” he concluded.

The Sullivan City Council wrapped up their 2024 meeting schedule Thursday night by approving annexing some property and revising some city codes.
The council opened the meeting with a public hearing on a plan to annex Windmill Legacy Farms, south of the city on South Hamilton Street west side of the road. During the hearing, Mayor Mike Mossman was asked if there are current plans to develop the five plus acre property.

Kennady Wilson, from Bethany, has made the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Dean’s List for the 2024 fall semester.
These students have demonstrated their academic abilities by receiving a grade point average of 3.4 or above in a single semester.
“Making the Dean’s List is a tremendous honor. It is a recognition of our students’ hard work and commitment to success,” said John Chenoweth, who serves as UW-Whitewater’s provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “We are proud of our students and hope to see their names on the list again. Congratulations to all who were recognized!”
The Registrar’s Office reports 3,775 students were selected for the Dean’s List for the fall semester. More than 11,700 students are currently enrolled at the university’s Whitewater and Rock County campuses.

Moultrie County Monthly Quarter Madness will hold their January Quarter Auction on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. The event will be held at the Sullivan American Legion Post #68. Moultrie County Illinois PAWS is the charity of the month (find them on Facebook at “Moultrie County Illinois PAWs”).
Moultrie County PAWS uses funds for companion animals in need of discretionary care and treatment. They also assist in identifying and returning stray animals to their owners. Money raised will also be used for spay and neutering for cats and dogs. Bring dog or cat treats or food for a free $1 bidding number (one number per person). A bake sale will also be part of raising funds for the organization.
Vendors at the event could include: Pampered Chef, Plunder Jewelry, Avon, Tastefully Simple, Color Street Nails, Jordan Essentials, Scentsy, jBloom Jewelry plus different vendors with tumblers, t-shirts, wreaths, earrings, wind spinners, potholders, signs, garden stakes, décor, soy based candles and melties, and more.
Doors open at 5:00 for supper with Griffin’s Catering. The pulled pork meal has advance tickets for sale plus individual meals can be purchased that night. The Quarter Auction begins at 6:30. All ages are welcome to attend. For more information visit “Mo Co Monthly Quarter Madness” Facebook page.
