The phrase “as American as apple pie” may lead one to believe that this classic dessert originated somewhere in the Americas. But this beloved dessert actually traces its origins to Europe. In fact, apples aren’t even native to North America, according to experts.

Apple pie is categorized alongside baseball and Coca-Cola® as truly American, but even though it was brought over to the colonies with settlers, it wasn’t until the 20th century that the treat was established as a symbol of national pride. By then, this apple-filled pastry had cemented itself in popular cuisine, and has since been replicated and reimagined in more ways than one might imagine.

Allied Capital Title and The Giving Place are teaming up this chilly season to host a winter coat drive for Moultrie County. The drive, aimed to battle the cold for all ages and sizes, asks for new or gently warn winter coats or other winter gear for donation. The coats are made available for anyone within Moultrie County, those seeking winter gear or coats should visit ACT during business hours. The drive does not have an end in site so winter coats and other gear will be accepted at all times. There are two different drop off locations, the ACT building at 18 West Harrison Street in Sullivan between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm and The Giving Place drop off, located at 1102 West Jackson Street, Sullivan from 8-5. Dove, an organization which gathers advocates, religious institutes and volunteers to address unmet social injustices, focusing on domestic violence, homelessness and through community and support empowerment to take the next step. Dove works to see equality, justice and understanding amongst all  people. Each year the group faces challenges surrounding their communities and efforts to assist those in need. Leading their findings was a special thanks to Moultrie County and other neighboring counties for the support of helping a hungry child, a high school student without electricity, a widow choosing between her home and her medication and a single father needing car repairs and new school shoes. Dove’s biggest and proudest achievement, bring Christmas to over 3,300 children, pushed them even further to create lasting results and meaningful assistance to needing communities. The reflection letter was finished with a sign-off from Dove Inc. CEO Darsonya Switzer, immediately followed by the funding sources. Dove’s programs and funding for them has always been a large ordeal, needing to get the proper meetings and paperwork to file for grants can be tricky, however Dove was persistent gaining 80% of the organization’s income coming from grants, an overwhelming $3,924,960. Congregation Giving, $123,050, Families and Individuals, $141,800, Corporations Giving, $164,282, Admin fees and rent, $520,674 and Civil groups and events, $33,550.

Not your grandma’s Bingo, this night of loud and crazy fun hosted by KandB Entertainment, fills the average game of Bingo with your favorite music. The Music Bingo will be hosted at the Sullivan American Legion, 8 E Strain Street, where 100% of the nights proceeds go to the Sullivan High School and directly to the students’ Post Prom event. Bingo will be accompanied by Live Djing by KandB Entertainment, ScottyB’s serving up delicious food, a full cash bar with drinks, raffle baskets, auction items, and cash prizes. Music Bingo will be on Saturday, December 7th, doors open at five and Bingo will start and hour later. Tickets will be $25 per person in advance, which includes one Bingo pack for the night or $30 at the door. There is also a table option, $175 for a table of eight which also includes seats and Bingo pack for the whole table. Extra Bingo packs may be purchased at the door based on availability for both individual and table tickets. Tickets can be purchased on Venmo at @SHSpostPROM2025. All attendees must be 21 or older.
