King grew up in Sigel, graduating high school in Teutopolis she went on to pursue education and received her bachelor’s degree in Communication Education and a master’s degree in Communication Studies from Illinois State University. At the most recent school board meeting of the ALAH District, Superintendent Shannon Cheek shared and discussed the results of the latest survey that was distributed to the communities within our district.
“The survey showed a lot of good support and messages although the results didn’t support the idea of a new gym,” Cheek said. In a separate interview, Cheek mentioned that the addition of a new gym would be removed from the district’s building plan. “We evaluated that information and feel that it’s important for the public to be heard and listened to,” he stated. “We want to make sure the communities understand that we are listening to their desires,” Cheek concluded. The Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library is offering free paperback books to anyone in the community. Just right through the front entry on some tables and in boxes are the libraries very old and worn out books that they are no longer using. In return for the years of community interest, these books are now free for the public to make room for the new books. No limit per person and the books are restocked daily.

The old horseshoe pits in Lovington’s Tom Conn Park held the memories of many residents as they watched or played horseshoes with friends and family. But last year the pits were removed to accommodate the new skate park. Yet, towards the end of the planning for the skate park project, Sara Gale approached the board to reinstall the horseshoe pits in a different location to keep alive the memory of her father Emmett Burcham, who was a champion thrower. Bethany has a new summer youth group every Wednesday at 7pm at C. P. Church, 219 S. Lincoln St. Ranging from middle school to high school, “By The Well” Club offers games, snacks, lesson and all around fun with peers. The youth group classes will be lead by Colten Lash.

The second Sullivan City council meeting of the month happened on Thursday July 18 at 6pm. Commissioner Sherwood was one of the first to speak for the night, touching on the phenomenal job the new construction company did on the new park courts and splash pad stating “I can’t recommend them enough”. Sherwood also had very little to report on vandalism and graffiti within the park mentioning the vandalism within the park has been way less this year than in previous years. Continuing on with Sullivan’s improvements, Commissioner Shook reported that they secured a grant to fix the roads downtown, running from Water Street to Madison then down to the highway. The grant is to both make the roads look nice but also fix some flaws which makes the roads more difficult to drive on. This road work is expected to start as soon as clearance has been given. Mid-Illinois Senior Services, Inc. offers Caregiver Advisory Programs that covers caregivers & grandparents or other relatives raising grandchildren/children in Moultrie, Douglas and Shelby Counties.
Caregiver support groups meet the first Thursday of the month at Mid-Illinois Senior Services in Sullivan at 1:00-2:30pm and the second Thursday of the month at 9:00am at the Arthur Public Library.

Windsor Elementary is offering even more events for the summer. July 26th there will be the Scoville Mobile Zoo at the Elementary School. Scoville Mobile Zoo offers a safe but close exploration and education of animals that children can experience first hand. From educational courses to fun facts, Scoville Mobile Zoo has many activities for the children to not waste a moment with the animals. August 2nd the University of Illinois will be in Windsor with the science bus, a mobile laboratory where children can learn fun science facts and do experiments. All programs will be provided at the school during lunch, from 11am to 1pm.
