Another great celebration hosted by Bethany

Bethany held their annual Bethany Celebration this past weekend. Activities started on Thursday evening with the Miss Bethany pageants. The new Royalty for 2024 includes Miss Deanna Clark, Junior Miss Adi O’Dell, Young Miss Abbie Flood, and Little Miss Brynley Liles-French. The queens were available during the weekend to hostess and help with other activities. Friday night included Opening Ceremonies with the singing of the National Anthem by Annie Flood and presentation of Marge Overlot as this year’s Grand Marshall. Other events Friday night included Tot-Rod pedal pulls, Touch a Truck, Sullivan Dance Studio Showcase, and DJ Nidal. Saturdays events featured a parade, softball tournament, bags tournament and mud volleyball. Kid events included Sally the Clown, inflatables and a free water station to cool off. BASO held a car show that awarded Top 5 and Best of Show. Main Stage events on Saturday were Shawn Dawson and hometown boy, Ed Webb and Night Moves. Entertainment in the beer tent was provided by Large Marge, Tyson Schulte and Country Sky.  Organizers Kaytie Orris and Cassandra Lambdin were pleased with the turnout this year and have already begun thinking ahead to next year’s event. They thank all the volunteers for helping put on the Celebration as it takes a village to put on an event of this size. Sullivan High School construction update

If you have driven down Main Street over the past few months, the vertical construction of the new Sullivan High School probably has you thinking about the educational opportunities that await our students. Construction at Sullivan High School continues to progress on-schedule and on-budget.

As of June, several key milestones have been achieved. The foundation has been laid, and the initial structure is taking shape. First floor classroom interior framing and rough in has started, and masons are currently working on gymnasium shell enclosure and locker rooms spaces. This gym will support both physical education classes and the school’s athletic programs. It will include a second floor walking track, as well as a weight room that will double as a storm shelter in the event of severe weather. Read More

Rhett and Ellie Lehman, of Sullivan, recently exhibited the Reserve Champion Cow-Calf Pair at the Illinois Junior Hereford Preview Show with Perks Cato 5049 Cady 1124 and her January 2024 bull calf RL JEL 1124 201 Silver Oak 402. Rhett and Ellie are the children of Jamie and Erica Lehman.

From virtual Texas Hold ‘Em to organizational communication and wildlife resource management, members of the Lake Land College Honors Program have been conducting undergraduate research this year in a variety of topics. Several Honors Program students recently presented their findings at the annual honors luncheon where they were also recognized for their achievements. There were six members of the Honors Program this year, including Adriene Lane, a speech communication major from Sullivan who graduated from Okaw Valley in 2013.

Roger Bragg and Jon England, owners of Sullivan EK Petroleum, do their share when it comes to giving back to the community. According to the two owners, since 2012, EK has donated over $6,000 to scholarship funds for local schools by donating a penny per gallon of gas. The company has also supported the Sullivan athletic fund through events such as the Three for Three Point Challenge where $3 is donated for every three-point shot made. Read More

Moultrie-Douglas 4-H Fair

The annual Moultrie-Douglas 4-H Fair is set to showcase the talents and dedication of local 4-H members with a series of events taking place June 30, July 9, and July 10. This year’s fair features a diverse lineup, including general project displays and livestock shows, culminating in a special Ag Day celebration. The fair will be held at various locations, including the Arthur United Methodist Church and the Moultrie-Douglas County Fairgrounds.

June 30: General Projects Show

The fair kicks off with the General Projects Show at the Arthur United Methodist Church. Registration begins at 2:00 p.m., and the show starts at 2:30. The show welcomes over fifty 4-H members bringing their projects to be judged. The projects showcase the knowledge, growth, and challenge the youth endured to produce something they are proud of. At the General Projects show, members will be judged in a conference style hoping to be selected to show their projects at the Illinois State Fair.  Read More

Moultrie County tax sale

Moultrie County, as Trustee, has completed their tax deed proceedings on real estate properties that were delinquent for 2020 and mobile homes that were delinquent for 2021 and prior real estate taxes. The County, as Trustee, will now offer for sale the real estate and mobile homes obtained to the public. They will offer approximately four real estate items and three mobile home items through a sealed bid auction sale. All sealed written bids must be in the Moultrie County Treasurer’s Office located in the Moultrie County Courthouse, 10 S. Main Street, Suite 10, Sullivan, no later than the close of business on July 5, 2024. All online bids must be submitted via www.iltaxsalebids.com no later than the close of business on July 5, 2024. 

The sale of these lots and mobile homes should be a major benefit to both the Taxing Districts and the neighboring property owners. This sale will place the real estate and mobile homes into the hands of individuals who have an interest in owning them. The County, as Trustee, hopes that these new owners will both maintain the property and the mobile homes and keep the taxes paid. By eliminating abandoned properties, the appearance of the neighborhood should improve, and the value of adjoining properties should increase. 

The required minimum bid on real estate is $826.00, and on mobile homes is $915.00. All items will be sold to the highest sealed bid received on or before July 5, 2024. Complete bidder’s packets and sale catalogs are now available at the Moultrie County Treasurer’s Office or online at www.iltaxsale.com.

Lesters in concert

Lovington First Church of God, 301 N State, Lovington, will have the Lesters in concert June 28 at 7p.m. The public is invited. A free will offering will be taken.

Pork chop dinner

A pork chop dinner will be served on Saturday, July 6 at the United Methodist Church fellowship hall in Hammond. Serving time is 4:30-7 p.m. and a meal including a pork chop sandwich, baked beans, chips, dessert and drink is $10. Take-outs and family rates are also available. The church is located at 3rd and D Streets.
