Loop Lake Shelbyville bike ride

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Friends of Lake Shelbyville are hosting the Loop Lake Shelbyville bike ride on Saturday, June 8th. All rides will start from the Lake Shelbyville Visitor and will include options for a 30 mile, 48 mile or a 65 mile ride. Proceeds for the ride will benefit the Friends of Lake Shelbyville (FOLS). The FOLS provides education, historical interpretation, recreational and environmental improvements at Lake Shelbyville. Students from the Arthur Christian School, ALAH High School, Arthur Grade School, Atwood-Hammond Grade School, and Lovington Grade School recently participated in the 2024 Americanism Essay Contest. First graders visit Ballard Nature Center 2024

First graders visit Ballard Nature Center
On May 8, first grade students from Sullivan Elementary School attended a field trip as part of their studies in life science. After several weeks of studying different habitats around the world, 72 students traveled to Ballard Nature Center in Altamont, IL. For many of these students, this was a new kind of experience. They learned about the different types of birds that are native to Illinois and how they interact within their native habitats. This trip was solely possible due to a grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Conservation Foundation. This grant is funded by the D.F. and M.T. Grohne Family Foundation and the Daniel F. and Ada T. Rice Foundation. Sullivan Elementary is grateful for this opportunity and for the support their students have been shown. Free summer meals

Sullivan Schools will be providing free meals to anyone 18 and under in our area. They plan to deliver door-to-door to anyone who would like to receive meals. This will occur one day per week with 5 days of meals per child. Meal delivery will begin the week of May 28 and run through August 9. Complete the form by 5pm on May 16 in order to allow for appropriate ordering of food and arrangement of delivery schedule. Everyone receiving meals will be contacted by May 28 to communicate your expected delivery date and time. They encourage all students to take advantage of this free program. LLC TRIO honors Clark

Lake Land College TRIO students were recently honored at an annual banquet. During the event, several students received awards. 

Among the awards was the Leadership Award, presented to Deanna Clark, Bethany for leading student involvement and serving as TRIO ambassador and also the TRIO Student of the Year Award.

Summer lunch program

Windsor CUSD1 has announced their 10th year of serving up free summer lunch and fun at Windsor Elementary School in Windsor. This year’s program starts on Tuesday, May 28th and runs through Friday, August 2nd. Serving time: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Friday.

WES offers an assortment of veggies, fruit, dairy and grains, along with the main items listed on the menu daily. Every meal includes a choice of milk or milk alternatives. Menu will be available on Windsor School Website and social media by May 17th. Menu is subject to change.

Hope House will be teaming up with them again this year to provide an line-up of Fun Summer activities.

All vehicle show

An all vehicle show will be held Sunday, August 18 on Main Street in Windsor. Hosted by Legion Post 725, registration will be from noon to 2:30 with awards being presented at 3. Registration is $15 with all proceeds benefiting American Legion projects. For information call 217-962-9945 or 217-259-5333.

Carolyn J. England

Carolyn J. England, 75, of Tower Hill, passed away 1:22 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2024, at her home.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, rural Bethany. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service, Tuesday, at the church in rural Bethany. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Bethany. Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Carolyn was born on August 12, 1948, in Decatur; the daughter of Fred and Norma Jean (Lofland) Davis. She married Cecil Dwayne England on October 1, 1966, in Sullivan; he preceded her in death on October 9, 2021. Her home church was Oak Grove Baptist Church. She enjoyed her flowers, gardening, quilting and researching genealogy.
She is survived by her sons, Andrew England of Wyoming, Thad (Peggy Bonilla) England of Pana and Nathaniel (April) England of Tower Hill; brothers, Robert Davis, Roger (Kathleen) Davis, John Davis, Eddie (Diane) Davis, Chris (Clara) Davis, Brian (Tracy) Davis, Jeff (Penny) Davis and Kenny (Leta) Davis all of Sullivan; sisters, Cathy (John) Elkin and Becky (Mike) Davis both of Sullivan. Carolyn is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 55 years, Cecil Dwayne England.
