Donna Scott

Donna Sue Scott, 82, of Springfield, Virginia, passed away at 11:00pm Eastern Time on February 24, 2024, at Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia. She relied on her strong faith during a long, courageous battle.

A Funeral Service will be held March 8, 2024, at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, Fairfax, Virginia. Service will commence at 1:00pm with visitation an hour prior to the service. Burial will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA  22116-7023. Read More

March Quarter Madness

Moultrie County Monthly Quarter Madness will hold their March Quarter Auction on Wednesday, March 13. The event will be held at the Sullivan American Legion. Sullivan ReStore Habitat for Humanity is the charity of the month. Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a resale store to raise money for affordable housing in Moultrie County. All funds raised through the ReStore stay in Moultrie County. Vendors at the event could include:  di-rect sales such as Avon, Hello Pink Jewelry, Scentsy, Plunder Jewelry, pawTree, Thirty-One, Pampered Chef, PLUS farm raised meat bundles, different craft vendors, hair bows, soy candles and melts, and more.  Come shop the vendors and stay for the Quarter Auction. Bring your quarters for charity item and extra bidding.  All-In-Paddle will be $20. Doors open at 6:00 and the Quarter Auction begins at 6:30. All ages are welcome to attend.  Food will be available for purchase through Bubba’s Food Truck in the Legion Parking Lot. Drink purchases can be made through the Legion. Benefit Concert

The Coles County Chorus annual Lenten benefit concert will be held on Sunday, March 17th at 4 p.m. in the United Christian Church, 200 East Lafayette, Mattoon. This is a different church than where the concert had been held in the past. For 25+ years the Coles County Barbershop Chorus has performed an annual Lenten benefit concert which has raised thousands of dollars for area homeless shelters and food pantry programs. The concert will be one hour of sacred and gospel songs sung by the chorus, quartets and ensembles. Admission is free and a free will offering will be taken.  Every penny raised will be given to area food pantries and homeless shelter programs. Each year over $2,000 is raised by the CCC for those in need. The thirty man chorus and quartet singers are from 19 different towns as far north as Champaign, as far south as Newton, as far east as Paris and as far west as Taylorville.

Funded by a USDA Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network grant, North Central Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Center is composed of lead agencies representing 12 states, including Illinois. The purpose is to make sure that you, your family, and the people you work with have access to the resources needed, when they are needed. The Center believes in working together to cultivate rural supports, mental health resources, and community to help farmers, ranchers, and other agriculture workers as they navigate increasing stress.  Read More

Jayla Jets-Black Wins Competition in Lions International Peace Poster Contest

Jayla Jets-Black, a 7th grade student at Sul-livan Middle School, has taken the first step to become an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Sullivan Lions Club. She placed first at our local level and her poster advanced to the district level where we recently received the news that she placed 3rd. Jayla’s poster was among more than 600,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions International is sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. The poster followed this year’s Lions Inter-national Peace Poster Contest theme “Dare to Dream. It received high marks for its originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest theme. Sullivan Lions Club wants to thank all Sullivan Middle School students who submitted an entry and give a special thanks to Sullivan CUSD #300 Art Teacher, Melissa Nichols for her assistance.

Lovington Egg Hunt

The Lovington Park Board will hold the annual Easter egg hunt on March 24 in the park. Hot dogs, chips and refreshments will be served at 12:30 with the hunt beginning at 1:00. A basket raffle will be held, a photographer will be available and Sparrows Unlimited will also have a bike giveaway.

LLC Hosts Used Book Sale

The Lake Land College Library will hold a used book sale on Monday, March 11 to Friday, March 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Members of the public are welcome at the sale, which will include a large selection of nonfiction books in most subject areas in addition to many fiction titles. All books will cost $0.50 and must be paid for in cash only. All proceeds will be used to help support and expand the library’s collection. Read More

Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation. Pictured (left to right) are Cameron Martin, Taylor Lilly, James Martin, Marla Martin and Angela McRill following the July 27 delivery.
