Giannoulias Advocates to Make Digital Driver’s Licenses & IDs Available

Continuing his commitment to modernize the Secretary of State’s office, Secretary Alexi Giannoulias is championing legislation to allow Illinois residents to start using digital driver’s licenses and state IDs.

Giannoulias’ backing marks the first time the Illinois Secretary of State’s office has supported such a measure, which now includes digital IDs as well as digital driver’s licenses. HB 4592 is sponsored by State Representative Kam Buckner (26th District) and State Senator Michael Hastings (19th District). If the bipartisan legislation passes, implementation could occur as early as next year.

“Smartphones have become convenient places to store everything from movie tickets, boarding passes and credit cards,” Giannoulias said. “With technological advancements and additional safeguards to make it the most secure and state-of-the-art system in the nation, we’re confident Illinoisans will soon have the option to ‘carry’ a digital version of their driver’s license or state ID.” Read More

SHS Track Starts Season Strong

The SHS Boys Track Team started the season off with a strong showing at the EIU Indoor Invitational on Saturday. The boys finished in 13th place out of 59 teams, with much of the competition being Class 2A and 3A schools. Author to Speak at the Arthur Public Library

Author Lisa Jones Baker will be at the Arthur Public Library on Saturday, April 6th at 1:00 pm. She will talk about her new book “The Quilt Room Secret” set in Arthur. She will also discuss what inspires her and her writing process. “The Quilt Room Secret” will be available for purchase with cash or check and will be autographed at that time. The vendor that IDNR chose in 2010 to renovate and ultimately reopen Eagle Creek Resort issued the state agency a notice of termination effective later that week. BMDD Resort, the vendor who was awarded the bid to renovate the resort walked away from the project after what they cited as a frustrating relationship with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. 

Two teams from Moultrie County, The Beacon Blizzards and the Bug Squashers raised money for the Special Olympics by taking the Polar Plunge into Lake Decatur. The Bug Squashers team raised $1893 for the Polar Plunge winning the award for the most money raised by a team with five or less members. The Beacon Blizzards, a team from the Moultrie County Beacon raised $1,248. Tara Nickerson of Bethany also participated in the plunge as part of 106.7 The Fox’s team and under the team Future Teachers of America, Bryan Binion of Arthur and Kelsey Bolin and Lane Elliott of Gays all participated.  Read More

Writing Team from Sullivan Ties for First Place in Contest

North Dean, a Sullivan High School sophomore, recently received word that the entry they submitted to the 2023 Rachel Carson Intergenerational Sense of the Wonder/Sense of the Wild Contest tied for first place in the “Essay with a Photograph” division. They worked with retired SHS English teacher Becky Lawson on an essay called “Resilient Beauty” and submitted it with a photo that they took of wildflowers, the topic of their essay.  Read More

SBL to Host Free Kidney Screenings

The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois is teaming up with Sarah Bush Lincoln to provide a free kidney and health screening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, March 15, for all community members. The screening will be held in the Rush and Salk Rooms of the SBL Lumpkin Education Center, 1000 Health Center Drive En-trance C.

Anyone interested in getting screened for kid-ney disease, high blood pressure or diabetes is encouraged to attend. There is no cost to be screened, and appointments are not necessary. Read More
