Plan Ahead for Snow and Ice

The calendar says November, so snow and ice probably aren’t far away – which is why the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and Illinois Tollway are reminding the public that it’s time for “Winter Weather – Get it Together.”

“At IDOT, preparing for winter is a year-long endeavor, but we need the public’s help to keep you and your loved ones safe during the coming weeks and months,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “The team at IDOT is ready to take on snow and ice with your cooperation. Plan ahead. Reduce speeds. Increase stopping distances between vehicles. Anticipate conditions will change quickly at any time. Keep your eyes on the road. And if you are out during snow removal operations, do not crowd the plow.”

Now is a crucial time to begin practicing basic winter driving skills and preparing for even routine trips to take longer to complete, though temperatures are above freezing during the day and roads appear clear. Coles County Barbershop Chorus Christmas Benefit

For more than 30 years, the Coles County Barbershop Chorus with quartets and ensembles have presented their annual one-hour concert. This year it will be held at the United Methodist Church on South 4th Street in Charleston at 3 p.m. on December 3rd.  The chorus began 53 years ago and singers live in 18 different communities within a 50-mile area: Altamont, Arcola, Arthur, Atwood, Brockton, Charleston, Champaign, Effingham, Hindsboro, Mattoon, Mt. Zion, Newton, Oakland, Paris, Tuscola, Shelby, Strasburg and Sullivan. Read More

December Programs at the Lovington Public Library

December 1st - The Kids craft will be a paper plate candle from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Needle night will be December 4th and 18th from 5-7 p.m.  If you would like to learn to crochet, knit, needlepoint, or even how to sew we have people that can help teach you. If you already know how and just want to hang out come join us.

December 5th is story time from 10-10:30 a.m.

December 8th is Recipe Swap all day. Bring your favorite Christmas cookies to swap with others.

December 11th from 5-7 p.m. will be our Ugly Christmas Sweater Party. We will have refreshments and games.

Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation.
