MCHGS Meeting

News Progress Posted on September 13, 2023 by webmasterSeptember 13, 2023

•September 13, 2023•

The famous story of the January 1945 liberation of Bataan Death March survivors held in the Notorious Cabanatuan POW camp in the Philippines will be told at the Sept. 21 meeting of the Moultrie County Historical Society. Dalace Scroggins, a Moultrie County man, was among the 100 Army Rangers and Scouts involved in the liberation. The prisoners stories of mistreatment, suffering and starvation while in the hands of the Japanese combined with the awful tales from the liberated German prison camps intensified efforts to defeat these evil regimes and end World War II. Vic  Arendell, son-in-law of Scroggins, will present the story along with that of two Moultrie men Morrison A. Wood and Edward C. Conlin who survived the death march only to die in the Philippine prison camps. The public is invited to attend the presentation on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at the History Center at 1303 S. Hamilton in Sullivan.

Foods That Can Keep Cholesterol in Check

News Progress Posted on September 13, 2023 by webmasterSeptember 13, 2023

•September 13, 2023•

Diet plays an important role in maintaining healthy cholesterol numbers. Although the level of cholesterol in a person’s blood is partly due to factors related to heredity, the foods one eats also affect cholesterol levels.

When doctors discuss cholesterol with their patients, they may refer to total cholesterol, bad cholesterol and good cholesterol. What does that mean? Total cholesterol is the combined number of cholesterol in the blood, and should be below 200. Good cholesterol is known as HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and ideally it should be above 60. Bad, or LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, should be below 100, says the Cleveland Clinic. A person who has a poor lipoprotein profile may be instructed to alter their diet. Learning which foods might help is an important tool in managing cholesterol and triglyceride numbers. Read More

Gold Star Mission’s 510-mile Gold Star 500 endurance bicycle ride will pass through Central and Southern Illinois from Sept. 19-23 with the goal of ensuring we ‘Always Remember, Never Forget’ the sacrifices of our fallen Illinois service members and their families.

“We are so grateful for the support of the communities. Our mission of remembering our fallen and supporting our Gold Star families is important to the people of Illinois and they show their support at all of our stops,” said Barry Tobias, President of Gold Star Mission. The ride is scheduled to end during Gold Star Family weekend just before Gold Star Mothers’ Day on Sunday, Sept. 24.

Gold Star Mission uses funds raised through the Gold Star 500 and other events throughout the year to award scholarships in honor of Illinois’ nearly 300 service members who have fallen since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In addition, they are producing professional videos as part of the Fallen Heroes History Project to remember each fallen service member. Injustice Watch

This article  is an update to the original story, which was produced by WBEZ, Chicago’s NPR news station, and Injustice Watch, a nonprofit news organization in Chicago focused on issues of equity and justice in the court system.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker defended the number of dying and disabled prisoners released under a landmark law that went into effect early last year at a news conference Thursday.

“The Coleman Act is, in fact, being carried out as it should be,” Pritzker told reporters in response to an Injustice Watch and WBEZ investigation, which found only 52 prisoners had been granted release under the law — far below the hundreds of terminally ill and incapacitated prisoners advocates say could have been released by now. Off to the Races: Sullivan-Okaw Valley Cross Country Season Underway

News Progress Posted on September 13, 2023 by webmasterSeptember 13, 2023

by E. Scott England

Under the guidance of new head coach, Isaiah Plank, the Sullivan-Okaw Valley Cross Country team finally had the opportunity to get some meets in after the opening meet of the season was canceled during the heatwave in late August.

The new opening meet was the Cow Chip Classic held in Chrisman held on September 2. As if the name wasn’t unique enough, this meet featured a one-of-its-kind formatting where runners left in flights in 20-25 minute intervals. Meet organizers tout this atypical structure as an opportunity for runners to compete against other runners of similar ability. Jonathan Iacobazzi had the highest finishing place with 7th overall. Julia Moody led the Lady Redskins runners with a 31st place finish out of 97 runners. Read More

The Sullivan-Okaw Valley Redskins stormed into Cumberland last Friday looking to extend their winning streak to three. They knew it wasn’t going to be easy as the Pirates of Cumberland were looking to add to their undefeated record as well.

Containing two-way threat Cumberland Senior Blake McMechan was one of the main focus points in the Redskins’ preparation throughout the week. And McMechan proved why just 38 seconds into the game when he stole a pass from Senior wide receiver Kaden Guest. The Pirates couldn’t capitalize as a solid defensive stand from the Redskins forced a fumble, recovered by senior Hayden Moody. Read More
