The Illinois Department on Aging has released EngAging Illinois: A Comprehensive Plan for Living Well, a landmark multisector plan addressing the needs of older adults and caregivers. The plan establishes a decade-long blueprint to ensure the growing population of older Illinoisans can live dignified, engaged, productive, and meaningful lives at every stage of life. “EngAging Illinois embodies the engagement and thoughtful people from across Illinois, representing the best of our state,” said the Governor. “This bold plan reflects the priorities of the people we serve and the role that state government should play in creating an age-friendly Illinois. IDOT: safety around plows, “Winter Weather, Get it Together”

News Progress Posted on January 21, 2026 by webmasterJanuary 21, 2026

•January 21, 2026•

The Illinois Department of Transportation is reminding drivers about roadway and plow safety during the winter months, particularly when sharing the roadways with snowplows.

Don’t crowd the plow. Don’t follow a plow or stop too closely to it. Snow plows move slowly, make wide turns, stop often, overlap lanes, and exit the road frequently. De-icer spread by the snowplow could hit your vehicle. Snow clouds thrown up by plows can reduce visibility to zero and conceal other vehicles and hazards. An operator’s field of vision is restricted. If you cannot see them, they cannot see you. Stay at least five car lengths behind the snow plow. The roadway behind an active plow is safer to drive on. Stay behind it and use caution when passing.

IEMA-OHS /American Lung Association opens 2026 student contests

News Progress Posted on January 21, 2026 by webmasterJanuary 21, 2026

•January 21, 2026•

During Radon Action Month, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS), along with the American Lung Association in Illinois, encourage families and schools to discuss radon and its harmful effects. One way to spur the conversation is to ask school-age students to enter artwork into the statewide awareness poster and video contests. “Radon is an invisible threat that poses a very real danger to our communities. As the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, it’s critical that we continue raising awareness and encouraging proactive testing,” said IEMA-OHS Director Ted Berger. “The creativity and passion we see in these student contests are truly inspiring. When young people take the lead in educating others through their creativity, they help shape a healthier future for generations to come.”

Salt
•January 21, 2026•

by Janet Roney

Last week I said that an interesting welcome awaited the very first pioneers who settled in Moultrie County and the Sand Creek area in Shelby County in the late 1820s, but before continuing, let’s review the situation on the western frontier.

Even though the British won the French and Indian War in 1763 and took control of the land beyond the mountains, settlers were slow to move there because the Indians did not quit fighting. Led by Chief Pontiac, they kept raiding frontier settlements in Virginia, the Carolinas, and Kentucky. The British had tried to stop new settlers with the Proclamation Line of 1763, a “do not cross line” drawn down the crest of the mountains. However, try telling a stubborn Scotsman, like my own ancestor or men like James Herrod and Daniel Boone, to stop coming over that line into Kentucky to hunt. Even after Pontiac’s War ended in 1765 with a truce, the Indian menace continued.

Another win one, lose one week for the Redskins

News Progress Posted on January 21, 2026 by webmasterJanuary 21, 2026

•January 21, 2026•

by E. Scott England

The Sullivan Redskins still hold a winning record of 10-8 (3-2 in conference play). They play every game with tenacity, led by their enthusiastic coach Spencer Plank. Their record is somewhat misgiving though as many of those losses have been close games.

Cerro Gordo/Bement

The game last week against CGB was another one of those close ones. Sullivan was always within reach, but they could not quite bring the game even. The Broncos took the lead early on and held it, barely, for the entire game.

by E. Scott England

The Lady Redskins are 12-6 overall after securing two more victories last week. Both of those were conference games, bringing the ladies’ conference record to 6-0. Their success this season has earned them the number one seed for the upcoming LPC tournament.

Cerro Gordo/Bement

It was another stellar game for the Lady Redskins against the Cerro Gordo/Bement Lady Broncos. A game that was again dominated by an impressive performance from senior Aeralyn Thrasher.
