City Council has First Reading for Appropriations

The Sullivan City Council held a regular meeting Monday, July 10. Commissioner Doug Shook attended the meeting via phone.
Nancy Barker inquired about the possibility of a new restaurant going in by State Farm, and Mayor Mossman said he didn’t know anything about it.
Under the consent agenda passed by the council was the approval of minutes of the regular meeting held on June 26 and the special meeting held on June 30, approval of claims, approval of a project authorization with Milano and Grunloh for the design and construction engineering on the sanitary sewer extension to the lumber company, approval of banking resolution 23-R, approval of pay estimate #1 for $267,707.48 to Beniach Construction for the Industrial Way project, approval of pay estimated #8 for $33,250.00 to Grunloh Construction, Inc. for the Water Treatment Plant project and approval of pay estimate #12 for $483,754.58 to Grunloh Building for the Water Treatment Plant project.
Commissioner Abbey Sherwood thanked Theresa Poland for painting the dugouts. She noted that the splash pad equipment has been delivered, and it is hoped construction will start this fall and be finished in the spring. Read More

Moultrie County Beacon to Celebrate 55th Anniversary July 15

The Moultrie County Beacon will celebrate their 55th Anniversary with a celebration called Jeepin’ for the Moultrie County Beacon on Saturday, July 15 at Sullivan American Legion Post 68. The event will last from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and will include a jeep run with registration beginning at 10 a.m. and departure at 11 a.m. The run is $10 per person. Also available will be food vendors, a bake sale, activities and crafts for the kids, 50/50 raffle and silent auction and musical performances by Shawn Dawson at 4 p.m. and Pizzazz at 6 p.m. Admission for the bands is $5. All proceeds go to Moultrie County Beacon.
Beacon Director Susan Rauch said the beginnings of the organization can be traced back to November 1966 when House Bill 708 was passed by the Illinois General Assembly which allowed tax revenue to be used for services for individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health issues. A group of local business people began working to establish funding within Moultrie County, and on February 28,1968, the Moultrie County Beacon, Inc. was established. Read More

Field Day of Learning

Local Master Naturalists want to inspire you to appreciate Illinois’ natural beauty and learn some interesting facts along the way. Join us for our third annual Field Day of Learning on Saturday, July 29, 8:30 am to 2:00 pm at Douglas-Hart Nature Center & Warbler Ridge Conservation Area.

We will offer opportunities to learn about a variety of topics throughout the day including bees and wasps and their importance, the lifecycle and behaviors of monarchs and black swallowtails, and the unique flora of Warbler Ridge Conservation Area. There will be a mix of indoor and outdoor learning. Participants will need to be able to hike moderate trails.
Check-in and welcome will begin at 8:30 am at Douglas-Hart Nature Center, 2204 Dewitt Ave. E, Mattoon. A light breakfast and water will be offered in the morning. Lunch will be on your own; we encourage you to bring a sack lunch. Be prepared to travel to Warbler Ridge Conservation Area for a guided nature walk at 1 PM.
Workshop participation is limited to twenty individuals and spots fill up quickly. To register go to go.illinois.edu/FLDay or call the Mattoon Extension office at 217-345-7034. The cost is $12.00 and includes handouts. Please bring drinking water for the outdoor sessions and wear proper clothing. Insect repellant is recommended. Donnelley Gathering

There will be a Donnelley get together on Sunday, July 23 at 3 pm at the Mattoon Moose Lodge 803. Food and snacks will be provided, feel free to bring a covered dish.

Spaghetti Dinner

Sullivan Dance Studio Competition Team will hold a Spaghetti Dinner at the Sullivan American Legion on Friday, July 21. Meal includes: spaghetti, side, garlic bread and tea or lemonade. Pick-up at Sullivan American Legion from 5-7pm. Tickets are pre-sale and deadline to purchase is July 19. They will also have limited walk in meals. Audubon Society Meeting

The Decatur Audubon Society invites Audubon members and other interested persons to its second summer meeting at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, at the Dam and Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center on the east side of the lake on IL Hwy 16. A brief meeting with announcements will precede a tour of the center led by a member of the Lake Shelbyville Volunteer Association. Attendees may then optionally enjoy a meal at a restaurant of their choice in Shelbyville.

Tractor Drive

Findlay Fire Department will be having a tractor drive on Saturday, July 22. Registration is 7 to 8 am and the drive starts at 8 am. Lineup is on the south side of the fire station. The drive is donation only, with proceeds going to the Findlay Fire and Ambulance Association scholarships. Tractors must be capable of running 12 mph. Side by sides are welcome. Parking and unloading will be at the elevator. The ride will end at Tailwinds for anyone that would like to eat together, you will be responsible for your own meal. Ronald G. ‘Ron’ Coy, 69, of Sullivan, passed away with his family by his side at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be 6:00 p.m. Monday, July 10, 2023 at the Reed Funeral Home with Pastor Kathy Prideaux officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. Monday evening. Memorials are suggested to the Sullivan Fire and Ambulance Service. Online condolences may be sent to the family at reedfuneralhome.net.
Mr. Coy was born on November 22, 1953 at Mattoon, Illinois, the son of Charles and Donna Ragen Coy. Ron was a bricklayer for 30 years and then worked for the Illinois Dept. of Transportation for 22 years. Ron was a former volunteer with the Sullivan Fire Protection District. He enjoyed playing softball, camping, cooking and helping Terry Warren Catering. He was an avid fan of his children and grandchildren’s sporting events, he hardly ever missed a game. He enjoyed mowing and helping Chris with his mowing business. Ron loved to travel and go on cruises with Angie. He married Angela Lindley on March 24, 1973 in Sullivan.
Survivors include his wife Angela; children Misha (Kris) Hutchings of O’Fallon, Missouri, Chris Coy of Sullivan and Brooke (Greg) Garrison of St. Charles, Missouri; grandchildren Konner Hutchings, Kyrstin Coy, Paiten Coy, Kensley Garrison and Jersey Garrison; sisters Rhonda Creek of Neoga and Carla Coy of Sullivan and a brother Tim (Kim) Coy of Sullivan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Kathy Glover.
