Heartland Mini Hoofs Visit Senior Center
The Heartland Mini Hoofs visited the Mid-Illinois Senior Services and Community Center on Thursday, June 15. Heartland Mini Hoofs, a non for profit organization, has a mini equine visitation therapy program. They operate solely on donations. Jacqueline Ann Jenkins peacefully passed away on June 8, 2023.
She was born October 16, 1930, to Josephine (Bradley) and Cyrus Yantis at home on their family farm outside Findlay, Illinois. She lived in various places in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana. Her final residence was at Mill Pond in Ankeny where she lived for almost 13 years. Jackie always loved working outside. She helped her father with the chores on the farm. She tended gardens at her own homes. She could be seen weeding the flower gardens at Mill Pond frequently. Read More

The Illinois Amish Heritage Center in partnership with the University of Illinois Extension presents “Let’s Learn about Bees” to be held on Saturday, July 8. The hours for the event are from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. This event is part of a new “enhanced Saturday” program that will be held periodically throughout the summer.
The purpose of the event is to educate on the importance of bees in our food system and show how you can create a bee friendly habitat. Many Amish have hives on their farms and have created bee gardens that attract pollinator insects. Honey is harvested from the hive and used in various recipes. Excess honey and related by-products are often sold. Read More

The Moultrie County Board approved the 2023 Moultrie County Comprehensive Plan and the Moultrie County Hazard Mitigation Plan during their monthly meeting. County Board member Aaron Wilhelm requested that if there are those on the board who have not read it, to do so since there is informative and helpful information in it. Kelly Lockhart from Coles County Regional Planning Commission was in attendance to answer any questions the board had.
Wilhelm asked what the purpose of the plan is. Lockhart said the goal is to determine land use, especially future land use, and transportation. He noted that if they want to apply for a grant, it needs to be in the comprehensive plans of a community, and it has to be updated every five years. He added they are in the process of updating Cumberland County’s plan now, and the city of Sullivan recently hired them as well. Read More

If I could spread it nice and thick on a slice of toast, I would.
I stick my neck out every week in an effort to evoke a smile and impart a dash of wisdom. If I whiff on either score, I feel defeated.
I do my best to turn bullying opportunities into good-natured learning experiences. That goes double for when a reader or I find fault with something our hardworking staff has done. I don’t name names, I don’t mock.
The world is better that way.
The fetid sea of social media belongs to the bullies, so it’s nice to occasionally watch them get their comeuppance.

Moultrie County’s annual Relay for Life exceeded it’s goal for the second year by raising $32,126.98 for the Moultrie County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. Pope’s Pavement Pounders with co-captains Tom and Sue Pope collected $1,702 to win the top team fundraising trophy. In all 27 teams participated in the 12 hour walk. Luminary sales (655) accounted for $3,276 of the total raised. Read More

Flag Day Ceremony Held at Sullivan American Legion
The Sullivan American Legion Post 68 and Boy Scout Troop 39 conducted a flag retirement ceremony on Wednesday, June 14 which was Flag Day. There was a short ceremony and then worn out flags were respectfully retired.
