The Moultrie County Board passed ordinances authorizing the Moultrie County treasurer to issue checks for the first round of American Rescue Plan Act funds that the county received. Receiving money in this round were Bethany American Legion Post #507 $14,000; Moultrie County Habitat for Humanity $46,800; Lovington American Legion Post #429 $5,000; Mid-Illinois Senior Services, Inc. $30,000; Sullivan American Legion Post #68 $25,000; Sullivan Lions Club $14,000; Lovington Fire Department $89,449; Bethany Fire and Ambulance District $150,000; Sullivan Fire Protection District $208,000 and Moultrie County Counseling Center $350,000. Glo Bingo will be held on Saturday, February 26 at the Sullivan VFW, 1146 IL-32, Sullivan. Doors open at 4:30 pm, bingo starts at 6 pm. Cost is $30 at the door and includes 6 Bingo cards for 10 games, glow hat and dauber. $5 per additional 6 cards. Over $1,000 in cash prizes. There will be a cash bar, the VFW kitchen will be open and a bake sale by donation. Must be 18 or older to attend. Proceeds benefit Down Syndrome. With thousands of Illinoisans missing out on the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and state Earned Tax Credit (EIC) each tax season, Governor JB Pritzker is reminding qualifying taxpayers to take advantage of these benefits.
“The Earned Income Tax Credit is a huge benefit and puts thousands of dollars in the pockets of low to moderate income families each year,” Governor JB Pritzker said. “Even if an individual does not owe any taxes, they may still be eligible for the credit and receive critical funding that can be used for bills and necessities.” Read More

Chocolate Covered Strawberries for St. Jude
Several members of Team Mattoon that will be participating in the St. Jude Run gathered at the Bethany Firehouse on Saturday to make chocolate covered strawberries as a fundraiser to help cover their entry fees. This is the fourth year they have done this fundraiser. An upcoming event for the St. Jude Team Mattoon group is the St. Jude Dash and Bash which will be held on June 11. Tea Party
Local mothers and their daughters enjoyed a fancy tea party at The Red Apple in Sullivan over the weekend. There was tea, snacks, games, big hats, fancy attire, and lots of laughs. The event was hosted by April-Lyn Golden.

National Burn Awareness Week February 6-12, is an initiative of the American Burn Association. Burn Awareness Week, observed the first full week in February, is a window of opportunity for organizations to mobilize burn, fire and life safety educators to unite in sharing a common burn awareness and prevention message in communities.
The theme for National Burn Awareness Week 2022, “Burning Issues in the Kitchen”, where a common risk of injury exists from scald burns, improperly used appliances, and distracted cooking occur. Annually, in the United States, approximately 400,000 people receive medical care for treatment of burn injuries. In 2018 alone, there were 3,655 deaths from fire and smoke inhalation and another 40,000 people were treated in hospitals for burn related injuries. Read More

The Lady Redskins lost to Mt. Zion by a score of 49-20. It was a very slow start for the Lady Redskins as they scored 7 points in the first half, but tied Mt. Zion 13-13 in the second half. Kiley Dyer led the team in scoring and rebounding as she had 6 points and 5 rebounds. Addison Minor and Chloe Smith each had 4 points. Emily Miller led in steals with 3.

Sullivan District Spelling Bee
Sullivan School District held their spelling bee on Monday afternoon in the high school/junior high commons. There were 28 students from the elementary school and junior high that participated in the bee. At the end of the bee there was a spell off to see who would be first alternate and second alternate. In total, there were three finalists and two alternates.
