Approximately a dozen people interested in learning about preserving food through canning attended Yes! You Can: Preserving Safely at the Arthur Public Library Saturday, February 4. The program was led by Nutrition and Wellness Educator Caitlin Mellendorf.
She began the program by explaining the two ways that food usually spoils. The first is through microorganisms causing food spoilage including molds, yeast and bacteria. Controlling the growing conditions for these harmful microorganisms is the best way to prevent food spoilage and decrease the risk of foodborne illness. Another way is through enzymes; she gave the example of bananas that change color over time. Read More

A sentence can take on a different meaning when you apply emphasis in different places.
The same word can hold different meanings in different contexts.
We bend, shape and recombine the same words to form different thoughts.
And that’s because it’s a whole lot easier to find a word with multiple meanings than a word with a singular one.

The Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary will be hosting a Wine Expo/Vendor Fair on Sunday, Feb. 19th from 1-4 PM. The wineries represented will be Lasata Wines, Fox Creek Vineyards and Press House Winery. Come out and sample some wine and shop their 27 vendors. Most vendors will have cash and carry available that day. They also have some direct sales, amazing artists and unique items. Food will be available to purchase during the event. There is a $5 entrance fee for those 21 and over. This is a fun afternoon and a special fundraiser for the Sullivan Auxiliary.

Heart disease might be seen as something that predominantly affects men, but women are not immune to this potentially deadly condition. In fact, doctors and healthcare professionals advise women to take serious heed of heart disease, which claims more female lives than breast cancer, other cancers, respiratory disease, and Alzheimer’s disease combined.
The American Heart Association indicates that more women are now aware that heart disease is the leading cause of death among females than they were 20 years ago. While just 30 percent of women recognized that in 1997, that figure had risen to 56 percent by 2012. However, the AHA reports that only 42 percent of women aged 35 and older are concerned about heart disease. Initiatives like Go Red for Women in February help shed light on the threat posed by heart disease. Read More
