Several questions arose while my wife and I were driving to a place that would surely serve us Italian bread: Does bread raise or does it rise? Does the baker raise the dough or rise it? What the heck is a transitive verb?
Questions like these constitute about 85% of our conversations.
So today we’ll take a look at “raise” and “rise” and their various usages and homophones.
Let’s start with the issue of bread.
Although I’ve heard it expressed both ways bread indeed “rises.” I often supplement my research by plugging words and phrases into Google’s Ngram Viewer, which tracks usage in books published in the United States.

Mirror Images to Present “Change”
Sullivan High School’s Mirror Images will be presenting their original play “Change” at The Little Theatre On The Square on Friday, February 3 at 5:30 p.m. Change is about a group of high school students who find a sense of belonging and healing through their school’s theater club. The play is starring Natalee Hunter, Elora Mast, Cora Emel, Logan Brinkman, Anna Durdel, Ivan Moxley, Avery Hopper, Elise Fleming, Johnathan Voegel, Jalen Herschberger, and Aston Johnson. Tickets for the play are $3.

Illinois EPA Grant Recipients

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) Director John J. Kim today announced Lead Service Line Inventory (LSLI) Grants to 48 communities to assist in meeting the requirements outlined in the Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act. The LSLI Grants, ranging from $20,000 - $50,000, will fund the creation of a complete lead service line inventory.
The Village of Lovington is the recipient of a $30,000 grant. Read More

Construction Progresses on Addition to SES

Sullivan Elementary students and staff were able to sign one of two I-beams that will be part of the sixteen classroom addition to the school.

Construction of a sixteen classroom addition to the Sullivan Elementary School commenced last fall. The classroom addition will allow the 5th grade students to return to SES. Fifth grade students have been housed in the middle school for the past several years due to a lack of classroom availability at SES. Read More

TLTOTS Wins Four Broadway World Regional Awards in Chicago Region

The Little Theatre On The Square has won four BroadwayWorld Regional awards in the Chicago Region. According to Executive Director John Stephens, this is the first time they have been nominated for these awards. They were nominated in nine categories and won four of them.
The awards won are Best Music for Always...Patsy Cline, Best Actor in a Musical for Brittany Ambler as Louise in Always...Patsy Cline, Best Director of a Musical for Clint Hromsco with La Cage Aux Folles and the biggest Best Neighborhood Theatre. They received runner up for Best Costume in La Cage Aux Folles, Best Ensemble for La Cage Aux Folles and Best Theatre for Young Audiences for Junie B. Jones Jr.
According to the awards website www.broadwayworld.com, the awards honor the best in regional productions, touring shows and more which had their first performance between October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022. While there is no awards ceremony or physical awards given out, the winners of each category receive online acknowledgement. Read More

Operation Enduring Support

Operation Enduring Support is now accepting donations for Easter Care Packages for our deployed military. These packages will be mailed on March 27th. This is our 20th year of sending care packages to our deployed military. Our young men and women in foreign countries do not have access to Post Exchanges and can really use the items they receive. These packages also are a reminder that people back home have not forgotten them. Suggested donations include Girl Scout Cookies, protein bars, cheese and cracker packs, beef Slim Jims/ Jerky, individual instant coffee, powdered drink packages, Puzzle books and playing cards, personal care items, deodorant, toothbrushes/paste, eye drops, lip balm, 5 blade razors. Other items needed are letters from school and Sunday school children, individually wrapped hard candy, gum, Gorilla Tape, hanging car deodorizers, cotton swabs, and wet wipes, 2023 calendars and new Birthday Cards. We also want to send packages to your loved ones so please submit your APO/FPO addresses to Ann Irwin at ann4dar@att.net or by calling (217) 428-5936. You may also contact Grace United Methodist Church at (217) 429-5374. Donations may be delivered to Grace UMC at 901 N Main St, Decatur, IL 62521 between 9:00 and 4:00 pm Monday thru Thursday until March 16th. Monetary donations are always welcome as our postage is now $21.20 per package. These packages are a morale boost for our Military, and we need your support to make this happen.

Sullivan Youth Baseball/Softball Registration

Sullivan Youth Baseball/Softball registration for 2023 is now open. Signups are open now until February 28, 10:00pm.
Sullivan Sports has leagues for many ages levels, beginning with T-Ball for children entering kindergarten in the fall. The leagues are as follows:
(Grade Entering)
Teeball - Kindergarten & 1st Grade
Coach-Pitch (Pinto) - 2nd & 3rd Grade
Elementary School Baseball & Softball - 4th & 5th grade
Middle School Baseball & Softball - 6th-8th grade
High School Baseball & Softball - 9th-11th grade

Practices typically begin in April, and games start May and last through beginning of July.

Road Closings for City Building Demolition

The City of Sullivan has authorized the demolition of the existing City Building located at 2 West Harrison St. The demolition is scheduled to begin sometime during the weeks beginning January 30, 2023 or February 10, 2023 and should last approximately five days. During that period, the contractor and City will have surrounding streets barricaded for the safety of the crew, city residents and businesses. Both lanes of traffic on Main Street will be closed, as well as the westbound lane of Harrison Street. Sidewalks within the vicinity will also be closed to pedestrian traffic.

Donald G. Sanders, 90, of Sullivan, passed away 2:08 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Monday, January 30, 2023, at McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan. Memorial services will be held 6:00 p.m. Monday, at McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan. Military Rites will be held at McMullin-Young Funeral Home at 4:30 p.m. Monday, performed by the Bethany American Legion Post #507. Burial will be held at a later date in Marrowbone Township Cemetery, Bethany. Memorials may be made to Prairie Heart Institute: Dr. Kola 1800 E Lakeshore Drive, Decatur, IL 62521

Donald was born on October 29, 1932, in Lincoln; the son of Lowell and Edith (Bosley) Sanders. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Esther Callahan on December 22, 1951; she preceded him in death on May 4, 1985. He later married Maurene Munch Netherton in June of 1986; she survives. Donald retired from Commercial Lovelace as a truck driver. He was a member of the Lovington Church of God. He enjoyed fishing and boating. Donald loved playing the harmonica, music, spending time with his grandchildren and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Maurene of Sullivan; son, Donald L. Sanders of Wilton Manor, FL; daughters, Diana Calhoun of Bethany and Cheryl (Randy) Florey of Jonesboro, AR; step-sons, Mark Munch of Bethany and Michael Munch of Sullivan; step-daughter, Sandy (Joe) Harchous of Allenville; brothers, Thomas (Laurie) Sanders of Deville, LA, and Steve (Rose) Sanders of Pineville, LA; sister, Carol (Larry) Sowers of Jewitt. Donald is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Esther, 3 brothers and 1 sister.
