Robert D. Newcome

Robert D. Newcome, 68, of Bethany, died December 27, 2022 in his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2023 in Seitz Funeral Home, Moweaqua.
Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Memorials may be made to the Casey Williams Foundation.
Robert was born on May 12, 1954 in Decatur, IL, the son of Robert T. and Norma J. (Nichols) Newcome. He married Donna Williams on July 16, 1977 in Assumption, IL. She survives.
Robert was a member of UAW #751 and retired from Caterpillar, where he worked for 35 years. He was also a security officer at Decatur Memorial Hospital for 30 years.
Surviving is his wife of 45 years, Donna; daughters: Ashley (Brigham) Hagerman of Sullivan, IL and Haley Cabit of Lincoln, IL; grandchildren: Eden Hagerman, Elise Hagerman and Jayden Cabit; and sisters: Beverly Griffith, Patricia (Ron) Long, Sue (Terry) Smith, Tami (David) Jones, all of Moweaqua, IL, and Brenda (Tom) Sargeant of Blue Mound, IL.
Robert was an accomplished artist and enjoyed pheasant and quail hunting, raising red setters and reading. A true family man, he cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents.

Kyle E. Lehman, 69, of Sullivan, passed away at 2:47 p.m., Sunday December 25, 2022, in his residence.
Celebration of Life services will be 10 a.m., Friday, December 30, in Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Mike Fender and Pastor Mike Craig officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Thursday. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan. Memorials are suggested to the family to establish an IGA Scholarship Fund in Kyle’s memory. 2022 Year in Review

Sullivan Fire Chief Mike Piper was honored during a walk out ceremony on Friday, December 31, 2021 after 30 years of service. Piper volunteered at the department for a year before joining October 18,1991. The new fire chief is Larry Edwards and his assistant chief is Chris Wright.
Dr. Gregory Mauck retired from Kaskaskia Valley Animal Hospital on December 30, 2021. He founded the animal hospital in Sullivan in May 1987. In retirement he planned to pursue a master’s degree in Medieval History and Historical Linguistics.
Jim Warren retired at the end of 2021 after 32+ years in the car business. His retirement plans included traveling and enjoying time with his eight grandchildren.
Julie Delpino retired from Sullivan IGA after working in the meat department for 14 years on December 31, 2021.
Bethany Fire Protection District recognized three of their members who retired from the department: Jim McMahan, Tom Rucker and Troy Yokley. Read More

Staff at Moultrie County Baby Talk sang Christmas carols at the Marathon gas station on Friday, December 23. This is the second year that they have done this. It is their way of bringing holiday cheer to those in the community.

In a word, they consume. They consume the product of their summer long labors. Honey is the product and is the fuel for heat, nutrition, and the colony’s survival during the cold winter months.
The colony’s preparations for the long winter months begins long before the last nectar producing blooms fade and disappear. House cleaning is in order, and one of those procedures is the removal of all male (drone) bees from the hive. The days of plenty are ending and the drones are denied rights to food and housing. As this process intensifies, the sisters that once fed them will literally deny them entrance to the hive. From that point only the worker bees (female) and the queen will occupy the hive. Read More

Area Agency on Aging Announces Final Grant Awards for FY 2023

The East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging (ECIAAA) recently announced the Older Americans Act (OAA) and Illinois General Revenue Fund (GRF) awards for FY 2023. Funding supports programs that help over 23,000 vulnerable older adults live with independence and dignity in their homes and communities in East Central Illinois. A total of $7,769,326 in OAA/GRF funding was awarded to community-based organizations in the counties of Champaign, Clark, Coles, Cumberland, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Ford, Iroquois, Livingston, McLean, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby and Vermilion.
