City Council Approves Pay Estimates and Change Order for Water Treatment Plant Project

The Sullivan City Council met Monday, October 10, and approved two pay estimates for the water treatment plant project and one change order. In new and unfinished business the agenda listed two items, but the item on Medicare Supplement and Prescription Drug Plan was tabled. The first pay estimate in the consent agenda was for $292,410 to Grunloh Construction Inc. Commissioner Chuck Woodworth was absent from the meeting.
The second pay estimate was for $154,068.93 to Grunloh Building, Inc. The change order was from Grunloh Building, Inc. for the water treatment project for a decrease of $58,615.13. The consent agenda was approved,
Verna and Roger Tice have a property on the west side of the square at 11 South Main. When Ms. Tice watched the City Council meeting, she was surprised to hear of the proposal to no longer allow residences on the first floor on the square. Tice said that at the last council meeting, it was said that the first floor was needed for businesses but noted she and her husband had only been approached once by someone wanting to establish a business. Dine with a Doc at Senior Center
On Tuesday, October 4, Dine with a Doc program offered by Senior Education Ministries was held at Mid-Illinois Senior Services. Dine with a Doc is a free program that welcomes the local senior public to hear an educational topic while enjoying a complimentary lunch. The program is a community effort of Senior Education Ministries, a doctor, a meal sponsor, area businesses and senior citizens. Each doctor has donated their time and various community businesses also participate by donating door prizes or providing the meal. This month’s guest doctor was L. Kaye DeSelms Dent (right), Doctor of Jurisprudence. Her law practice focuses on estate planning, probate, elder law and she is Medicaid Licensed in Illinois. She was joined for the presentation by Associate Attorney Erica Feldhake (left).

Mo. Co. Beacon Recognizes Consumers Employed in the Community

In recognition and celebration of this month being National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Moultrie County Beacon had a luncheon for their consumers that are currently employed in the community. On Friday, October 7, the Franklin family was finally able to see what their new home looked like and receive the keys. Jennifer, Abbey and Maddox were presented with a Bible, American flag and house keys during the house blessing ceremony. According to Cheryl Thomas, Family Support sponsor, there were six or seven families interviewed this year in the process of determining who would partner with Habitat on the home. Read More

MCHGS Program

As our nation’s November mid-term elections approach, the Moultrie County Historical and Genealogical Society will be looking back at “Prominent Politicians from Moultrie County” on October 20 at 7:00 pm in their new History Center located at 1303 S. Hamilton, Sullivan. The program will be presented by Paul L. Stone of Sullivan, who has made a study of our prominent politicians from the past, which includes members of the US Senate, the US House of Representatives, a speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, and a chairman of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. They lived in the communities of Bethany, Lovington, Sullivan, and the old village of East Nelson. As a retired lawyer who served thirteen years as Moultrie County’s States Attorney, President of the Illinois States Attorney Association, past president of the MCHGS, and son of one of those prominent politicians, he has intimate knowledge of the lasting impact our politicians have made on our state and country’s history. The public is invited to attend this informative and entertaining evening.

Mobile Food Pantry

The University of Illinois Extension in cooperating partnership with Decatur Catholic Charities and Sullivan United Methodist Church will hold a mobile food pantry on Wednesday, October 26 from 4 to 5 pm at the Sullivan United Methodist Church, 216 W. Jefferson, Sullivan (across from the firehouse). A mobile food pantry delivers a two week supply of food per family in rural communities. Any individual or family that does not have a steady food supply qualifies to receive food. No financial information is required to qualify. This distribution is open to all not only residents of Sullivan. Deadline to sign up is by 4:30 pm on Friday, October 21. Call 217-728-4436, 217-855-3933 or 217-728-3933 to sign up. Once your form is completed by phone, you will be given a number to bring with you on the day of distribution. If you lose your number, you need to bring identification. The food will be distributed according to household size on Friday, October 28 from 4 pm to 5 pm at the Methodist Church in parking lot across the street.
