Every year on June 14 Americans celebrate Flag Day. Not surprisingly, it is considered the most appropriate day to hold flag disposal ceremonies which are often held in the evening.
And so, on June 14 at 6 p.m., the Sullivan American Legion Honor Guard with assistance from local Boy Scout Troop 39 conducted a flag retirement ceremony in accordance with the United States Flag Code.
Just as there is etiquette for displaying Old Glory, there is also proper etiquette for the respectful disposal of torn, faded and worn-out flags no longer suitable for display. Read More

Craig and Nichole Hendry didn’t originally set out to be blueberry farmers. “We sort of fell into it,” Nichole said. “We wanted to live in the country.” Someone asked the couple if they would be interested in a blueberry farm.
“We came out to look at it and fell in love with it,” she said. That was in the fall of 2019. Nichole says their first winter here they went to seminars and called other blueberry farmers to ask for advice. The farm has 1,000 bushes on the three acres, and there are five varieties of blueberries. Read More

HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Offers Tips for Preventing Heatstroke

News Progress Posted on June 23, 2021 by webmasterJune 23, 2021

•June 23, 2021•
As we enter the summer months and we start to get back to our typical summer activities like swimming, yard work, golf and many others we need to be cautious of heatstroke. HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital recommends taking the following measures to prevent heatstroke, which could cause serious complications or death:
• Wear loose fitting clothes – Loose fitting clothes allow for your body to cool properly as opposed to tight or heavy clothes.
• Drink plenty of fluids – Staying hydrated will help you maintain a normal body temperature and will help your body sweat.
• Protect yourself against sunburn – Use sunscreen, reapplying every two hours, as well as hats and sunglasses to protect against sunburns. Sit under the shade from time to time. Read More

Lake Land College Introduces New Special Admission

News Progress Posted on June 23, 2021 by webmasterJune 23, 2021

•June 23, 2021•
Lake Land College will begin offering a new special admission Fire Science program in Fall 2021 designed exclusively for current firefighters and volunteers seeking career advancement. Those interested in applying must first receive a recommendation from their fire chief.
The program is approved by the state fire marshal and will assist these professionals in earning Fire Officer 1 and 2 certifications, allowing them to increase their knowledge and skills as well as advance their careers. One key advantage of Lake Land College’s new program is the flexible format.
“They do have programs like this across the state, but most of them are Monday through Friday,” Fire Science Management Adjunct Faculty Member Rob Plummer said. “For volunteers and folks who work during the week it can be hard to do that. They often have to take vacation time or make other schedule changes.” Read More

One Arthur business has recently added organic produce and whole foods to what they offer in their store. Meadowview Herbs has been in business for five years and until recently has focused mostly on herbs and essential oils.
Owners William and Elizabeth Schlabach decided to shift their focus slightly to include organic foods. According to William, a few years ago his wife Elizabeth contracted Lyme’s disease and was very sick. One of the ways that she treated it is by eating organically. “Proper food is key in staying well,” William said. Read More

Happy belated Father’s Day, gents.
In honor of you, I’m going to root around in my mailbag for missives only from men.
I’m sure someone will remind me of this injustice in advance of May 8, 2022.
But don’t worry, everyone. Men have more things on their minds than befouled sports stories and whether there is a “q” in “barbecue.”
