Grove Family Donates Memorial Bench to Marrowbone Public Library District

A memorial bench now sits in front of the Marrowbone Public Library in memory of a former head librarian. The bench is in memory of Jim and Joann Grove and was donated by the Grove family.
Joanne was the head librarian at the library from 1970-1988. She finished out her library career with the Rolling Prairie Library System.
Joanne was also notable because she was elected the first woman mayor of Bethany in 1997. She got to work, writing a grant that replaced the aging sewer system, formed a planning committee and convinced the village board to establish a TIF district. She had to give up her position as mayor in 2000 due to a stroke. Read More

County Board Chairman Resigns During Special Meeting

The Moultrie County Board held a special meeting Friday, March 18. Eight of the nine board members were present. The meeting was called to discuss/take action on two positions open. One is a department head or director of Planning and Zoning and the other is an EMA position.

City Council Passes Architectural Agreement for City Building

The Sullivan City Council held a regular meeting on Monday, March 28, and Mayor Richard Glazebrook began the meeting by recognizing Julie Shasteen who worked for the city for many years, saying she worked hard and enjoyed her job. She recently passed away.
Commissioner Abbey Sherwood made a motion to approve the architectural agreement with Utz and Associates regarding the city building. According to Treasurer Sarah Golden, the design fees will be 10% of the total project. The initial cost of construction is estimated to be $1,800,000. Cadwell Community Blood Drive

A community blood drive will be held on Wednesday, April 13 from 3 to 7 pm in a donor bus parked by M&E Woodcrafts, 1533 CR 1900N, Cadwell. Drive Thru Dinner

Bethany Fire and Ambulance will host a drive thru dinner on Saturday, April 9 from 4 to 7 pm at the Bethany firehouse. Cost is $10 a meal and no advance tickets are needed. Menu includes smoked pulled pork, baked beans, cornbread and chips. Free delivery for village residents. For delivery call 217-521-5449.

Liquor Sales Permitted on Sundays

The Village of Lovington board met on March 14. During that meeting, the board approved amending the ordinance about liquor sales. Prior to the new ordinance, liquor sales were not allowed on Sundays. The board approved allowing liquor sales on Sundays except between the hours 1 am and 6 am. The new ordinance has made the closed time the same each day.

Mirror Images to Present ‘Invisible’

Sullivan High School’s Mirror Images will present ‘Invisible’ on Friday, April 1 at 6:00 pm at the Little Theatre on the Square. Tickets will be $3 at the door. The show, written by members of the prevention theater group and director Krista Houk, is about a high school student who goes missing and the search to find them. Houk explained, “Students work together to find a missing classmate. They learn it’s safe to share their secrets with each other.” She added that the basic message of the play is that “it’s okay to rely on others and to reach out if you need help.”

GriefShare sponsored by First Christian Church, Sullivan, will be held at the church Tuesdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. through May 31.
Each session includes a time to share thoughts about the previous week’s learning, new material delivered via an approximately 40-minute video, and a discussion of the main ideas in the video. Some topics discussed by both grief experts and former GriefShare attendees (on the videos) are: Is This Normal? Challenges of Grief, The Journey of Grief, Why?, Stuck, and the Lessons of Grief. Girls’ Basketball All Conference

The 2021-22 Central Illinois Conference has announced those named to girls’ basketball all conference. Alaina Moore was named to second team and Izabelle Hay was named honorable mention. Both girls are from Sullivan.
