Lake Land College will host a virtual information session for its new Court Reporting and Captioning program March 24 at 6 p.m. Attendees will learn about the multiple career opportunities for court reporters and captioners, as well as the advantages of Lake Land’s online program.
Lake Land College launched the program this past fall in response to the high demand for court reporting and closed-captioning professionals throughout the state and nation.
“Court reporting creates several opportunities for rewarding career paths for students who are interested in developing this skill set,” Lisa Earp, business instructor/director of court reporting/office professionals program coordinator, said. “Those who are successful in this field are often good listeners, have advanced typing or texting speeds, are talented musicians and are strong in English and grammar.” Read More

Local Students Named to Dean’s List

Students from the area were named to the Blackburn College Dean’s List for the fall 2021 semester. Students named to the Dean’s list must earn a grade point average of 3.6 or higher for the semester. Those named to the list were Kasey Bean and Valerie Corrie, both of Gays; and Shyanne Hunter of Sullivan.

The aroma of the Robinson gym was insane. Everyone was on their feet: parents, students, coaches. I couldn’t hear myself think, but that was a good thing. I didn’t need to think of much, all we had to do was play our game and we had it in the bag. The Lady Redskins couldn’t handle nerves at the sectional championship. Confidence is key. If we win this game, we advance to state. The elite eight. Today was Wednesday, December 8th and that night we could not accept failure.
The clock had run to one minute, it was game time. We ripped off our warmups and ran to the huddle. I was matched up on number fourteen. I eyed her with a glance. City Council holds special meeting to Award Bid for Water Treatment Plant

Sullivan City Council held a special meeting Tuesday, March 1, to discuss and award the bid for the water treatment plant. The bid was awarded to Grunloh Building with All Service doing filter work at a price of $10,391,688.

Moultrie County students had a “sweet” time learning how chocolate is made with Ag in the Classroom in February. Students learned where it all begins by getting to see and hold a real cacao pod. Ag Literacy Coordinator, Amanda Sanner, said that students really enjoyed this lesson, especially the chocolate taste test at the end. Illinois Ag in the Classroom is a working partnership involving agriculture, agribusiness, and agricultural education to provide Illinois educators and students with resources that will help them understand the role of a vital agriculture in their lives and society. Sullivan FFA held a complimentary dinner and live auction on Saturday, March 5 in the Sullivan High School gym. One of the items auctioned off was a piggy bank that had traveled to various places around Sullivan and those who wanted to make a donation placed it in the bank. The Sullivan school board meeting had more than 100 spectators and some 25 activists from the University of Illinois and Eastern Illinois University, flanked by community members who were mostly SHS students, who brought posters to protest the district using the term Redskins for sports.
The Sullivan City Council moved to pursue a third TIF district. The newly proposed district encompassed 25 3/4 acres and included a new 36 housing unit subdivision. Read More
