Heating Equipment and Carbon Monoxide Safety

Cold winter winds continue to bring a chill to the state meaning many Illinoisans will be turning up their thermostats to stay warm for the rest of the winter season. This also brings an increased risk for home fires and carbon monoxide incidents. Unlike smoke, carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas only detectable by special devices and CO alarms. The Office of the State Fire Marshal encourages residents to have their furnaces checked, change furnace filters and to make sure carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke detectors are functioning properly. 2022 Illinois Tax Filing Season Began Jan. 24

The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) began accepting 2021 state individual income tax returns on Monday, January 24, 2022, the same date that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began accepting federal individual income tax returns.
“We encourage taxpayers to file their taxes electronically and choose direct deposit, as early as possible in the tax season, to ensure the fastest processing and issuance of any refunds,” said IDOR Director David Harris. “Taxpayers may file their electronic returns for free with MyTax Illinois, our free online account management program. Electronic filing is also available through third party software or with most tax preparers.” Read More

Millikin University to host Panel Discussion on Human Trafficking Education

The Human Trafficking Research Lab at Millikin University is partnering with the Set Free Movement-Macon County to host the 5th annual panel discussion for Human Trafficking Awareness Month entitled “Human Trafficking Education.”

Happy New Year! I thought it might be good to kick off the year with an article about healthy eating since so many resolutions are related to that topic. This article is from Extension Educator Kristin Bogdonas and explains why eating certain colored foods are good for us. Kristin says:
The function of Anthocyanins in Plants:
· Colored pigments in plants are produced to protect them from pathogens, predators, and climate conditions.
· They attract pollinators and act as antifeedants (adversely affects insects when eaten) and phytoalexins (inhibit the growth of parasites).
· Contribute to the plants’ sensory characteristics, color, and nutritional value.

Miller Barn to be Disassembled, Moved

The east side of the Miller barn which was built in 1879. There are plans to disassemble the barn starting Monday, January 31. The barn will be raised in the fall on the site of the Illinois Amish Heritage Center.

A local barn will be disassembled, moved to the Illinois Amish Heritage Center and reassembled later in the year. The Miller barn, built in 1879, is in its original condition including the threshing floor and grain bins; however, there is a concrete floor which was put in the south end of the barn in 1954.
The barn will be moved, fully repaired and restored. The plan is to start disassembling the barn Monday, January 31 and to have it down in four to five days. Read More
City Council Authorizes Issuance of Bonds for Water Plant

The City Council authorized the issuance of water works and sewerage system revenue bonds of the city of Sullivan. The estimated cost of the project including legal fees and other costs of issuance of the bonds is $10,500,000.
Mike Kirk had questions about the bonds that were to be issued for water works and sewerage system bonds. Treasurer Sarah Golden explained that the payback time is 40 years. Kirk asked Commissioner Chuck Woodworth whether it would be possible to spend money to get the water plant to run for another 20 years. “It would be more in the long run to retrofit what we already have compared to building a new one,” he said. Woodworth said he originally was looking at taking what they have and upgrading it, but it would be more money to do that than build new.
Abbey Sherwood reminded everyone there is public swim at the Civic Center Thursday to Sunday. She and Golden had conversations in regard to TIF and TIF reimbursements. Sherwood added that she had talked with several people in regard to the IBEW contract. Read More
