The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville is offering additional deer hunting opportunities at Whitley Creek Recreation Area in Moultrie County for disabled deer hunters holding a state issued P2A card. Disabled hunters will be able to reserve one of 4 blinds in the closed Recreation Area during archery deer season. All four blinds were built by Boy Scouts to earn their Eagle Scout status. Read More

OV Boys’ Golf Takes Second
The Okaw Valley boys’ golf team finished 2nd overall in the LPC Championship at Arcola. Trey Hall and Braeden Nichols finished 7th and 8th to earn all-conference.

Girls
The Okaw Valley girls’ golf team won the Lincoln Prairie Conference tournament championship with a score of 423 at Arcola Saturday.
All six Timberwolves finished in the top eight spots to earn all-conference honors.
Blue Ridge took second place with at 478, and Villa Grove placed third with at 573.
Malorie Wons led the Timberwolves with a score of 99 for second place.
Bailey Bennett and Rissa Montgomery each shot a 107 for second and third place.
Karlie Stauder carded 110 for sixth place, and Reagan Reedy shot a 112 for seventh.
Kylie Stauder rounded out the scored with a 121.
The Timberwolves are set to enter IHSA Regional action this week.

Windsor High School will be celebrating Homecoming the week of September 27 thru October 2. The Homecoming Volleyball game will begin at 5:00 p.m. on October 1st. The Homecoming Dance will be held outdoors at the High School on October 2. Coronation will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the dance will be 8:00pm until 11:00pm.

Obituaries 9-29-2021: Betty Ruff
Betty was born April 10, 1926, in Cerro Gordo; the daughter of Emmett and Ethel (Allen) Good. She married Cecil L. Ruff on October 22, 1968, in Effingham; he preceded her in death on January 5, 2013. Betty loved playing cards, playing bingo and going out to eat.
She is survived by her daughter, Joy Bowman of Melbourne, FL; granddaughter, Lauren Kinert of Lovington; great-grandson, Griffin Hilton of Lovington.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil and sister, Lois Wilbur.

Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service, Friday at the funeral home in Sullivan. The family request casual attire. Face masks are suggested and please practice social distancing for the services. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Bethany, with Military Rites by the Sullivan American Legion Post #68. Sam was born December 11, 1936, in Kirksville; the son of M.D. and Edna May (Matheson) Frederick. He served in the United States Army. Sam married Wilma Kay Armstrong on November 4, 1988, in Sullivan; she preceded him in death on April 27, 2014. He attended the Oak Grove Baptist Church in rural Bethany and was a member of the Sullivan VFW and Sullivan American Legion Post #68. Sam enjoyed fishing, working in his garden and butchering.
He is survived by his son, Wesley Dean (Christy Ann) Frederick of Arthur; step-sons, Steve Miller and Doug Miller; brother, Jake (Shirley) Frederick of Mattoon; sisters, Beverly Bolsen of Mattoon and Pearl Hudson of Mattoon. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 9 brothers and sisters.

Eller Receives Award From American Red Cross

Chase Eller, 17, of Sullivan, was recently awarded the American Red Cross’ Certificate of Extraordinary Personal Action for helping a choking child at a Decatur restaurant in January 2021. Established in 1911, the national Lifesaving Awards are issued by American Red Cross headquarters in Washington, D.C. to highlight whenever lifesaving skills are used.
Dawn Morris, South-Central Executive Director of the Illinois Region of the American Red Cross, presented the award to Chase during the August 10 virtual Red Cross South Central Illinois Chapter Board of Directors meeting. Read More
Sullivan AMBUCS Deck Roof On Habitat House

The Sullivan AMBUCS partnered with the Moultrie County Habitat for Humanity on September 9 to put the roof on the newest Habitat build. According to Bob Gillespie, the club suggested that Habitat find a day where they could come out and help build the home. The prefaced their offer by saying they would be willing to do any job no matter how hard, dirty or crummy. “Given the advancing ages of out Care-a-vanner builders who are all retired couples/individuals we don’t have many volunteers who are able to work at heights such as on a roof,” he said. Cruise Night On The Square

The Sullivan Street Machine Association will be having Cruise Night On The Square on Saturday, October 2 starting at 3 pm. Registration is only $10. All makes, models and years are welcome. Over $1,500 in door prizes. There will be bounce houses, goodie bags and a cruise route. Dash plaques for the first 100 registered. Free popcorn provided by Boy Scout Troop 39.
