Sullivan Boys’ Basketball Drops Game Against Shelbyville

The Sullivan boys’ basketball team dropped a Central Illinois Conference game against Shelbyville Friday night.
The Redskins fell behind 11-5 in the first and headed into the half behind 22-17.
The Rams took advantage of a 14-7 third quarter run to extend their lead.
Shelbyville held on from there for the eventual 54-48 win.
Leyton Ellis scored a team-high 21 points, and Ian Plank tallied four steals, three assists, and 14 points.

Board hires Marla Graham as the new Lovington Grade School Principal

Jacob Bettinger, an Eagle Scout, attended the ALAH District School Board meeting Wednesday, February 17. Last year he had informed the board of his plan to build an enclosed see-through bus stop shelter at Lovington Grade School.
The enclosed bus stop will measure approximately 6 ft. by 12 ft. to accommodate 10-12 students and will be located east of the old Lovington High School parking lot. He wishes to buy the supplies to build the enclosure rather than buy a prebuilt one as that would be more cost effective. Prebuilt structures cost about $6,000 whereas it would be only around $3,000 to build one himself. He hopes to get sponsors, donations and volunteers to help. His reasoning behind choosing this as his project is because he and his parents have noticed several of the high school students waiting to ride the bus from Lovington to Arthur outside in the elements - especially when it is either raining or snowing. Superintendent Shannon Creek is very pleased with Jacob’s idea and mentioned it would be a great idea to document the project as it is built. LLC Part-Time Fall Semester Honors List

Lake Land College recently announced that more than 400 part-time students earned academic honors for the 2020 fall semester.
To qualify for the president’s list, a student must have completed six to 11 credit hours in courses numbered 040 or higher per semester, excluding summer term, with a GPA of 3.8 – 4.0.
To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must have completed six to 11 credit hours in courses numbered 040 or higher per semester, excluding summer term, with a GPA of 3.65 – 3.79.
To qualify for the honor’s list, a student must have completed six to 11 hours in courses numbered 040 or higher per semester, excluding summer term, with a GPA of 3.5 – 3.64.
A grade “A” is four points, a “B” is three points, a “C” is two points, etc.

Lakeview College of Nursing Students Receive Scholarships

Lakeview College of Nursing in Danville and Charleston awarded numerous scholarships for the Spring 2021 semester. Those from the local area who received scholarships include the following:
Whitney Miller, of Sullivan, received the Manford Darnall Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund and Hannah Nowlin, of Atwood, received the Helen Feldkamp Memorial Scholarship. Both attend Lakeview’s Charleston Campus.
Lakeview College of Nursing offers a bachelor of science in nursing degree. It is a single-purpose, private institution that has specialized in nursing education in the Danville, IL area since 1894. Lakeview began offering the program in Charleston, IL, in the fall of 2001.

New Dialing Procedure for Customers within 217 Area Code

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) today reminded residential and business customers that, beginning February 27, 2021, mandatory dialing will occur where all local calls made within the Illinois 217 Area Code will have to be placed using the 10-digit telephone number (area code + the 7-digit telephone number). That day, the 447 area code will be added as an overlay to the region currently served by area code 217 to ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers for the area. An overlay is the addition of another area code (447) to the same geographic region served by an existing area code (217).
The ICC ordered an area code overlay for the 217 Area Code on August 15, 2006, to be implemented upon the exhaust of available, unassigned 217 prefixes. An overlay does not require customers to change their existing area code or telephone number. Read More

Hyllis F. Rhoades, 96, of Springfield, formerly of Sullivan, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday February 17, 2021, in Heritage Health in Springfield.
Celebration of Life services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Sullivan First United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Fender officiating, assisted by Adam McReynolds. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bethany. Read More

Sullivan Girls’ Basketball Posts Wins

The Sullivan girls’ basketball team picked up two more wins this week, including knocking off the No. 8 ranked Clinton Maroons.
Earlier in this month, Sullivan lost to No. 1 ranked Paris.
Thursday night, the Redskins knocked Clinton out of the top-ten state rankings with a 66-45 win.
After taking an 18-12 lead in the first quarter, Sullivan took advantage of an 18-9 run in the second quarter for a 36-21 halftime lead.
The Redskins extended the lead by six points in the third quarter, then held on in the fourth for the final score.
“This was a great team win against a good state ranked team,” said. Sullivan coach Sheri McCain. “Emily White played the best all-around game I have ever seen her play. She was 7-for-8 from behind the arc this evening. We did a great job defensively and stuck to the game plan. I am so proud of these young ladies and how hard they continue to work knowing there is no post-season this year.” Read More
