Courtyard Estates of Sullivan Introduces “Hugging Booth”

Courtyard Estates of Sullivan, Supportive Living, has had to get creative during COVID-19. Many things have had to be modified for safety and not only has the staff come up with new ideas, the families have been creative as well, specifically one family that has made it possible for tenants to actually “hug” their loved one.
The Welsh family generously gifted Courtyard Estates of Sullivan with a “hugging booth.” They came up with the idea, along with the materials and the construction of the whole booth. It sits against an outer door that gives families safe entrance into a booth and it’s fit with plastic arms and gloves on both sides of the booth, for both the tenant and family member to hug. Tiffany and Shaun Cotner of Bethany with their new son Harrison Cotner, the first baby of 2021 born at St. Mary’s Hospital. Harrison arrived at 7:20 a.m. Jan 1, weighing 8 pounds and 7.6 ounces and is 21 inches long.

Allen “Lee” Slater

Allen “Lee” Slater, 90, of Windsor passed away at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, January 3, 2021 at home.
Lee was born August 23, 1930, in Pana, the son of John and Mildred Slater. Lee grew up in Windsor, graduating from Windsor High School in 1948; he was a star basketball player. After graduation, Lee attended Millikin University before marrying Elizabeth Kays, his high school sweetheart, in 1949. Lee joined the family business, Windsor Supply Co., where he worked building and remodeling homes. He built many homes in and around the Windsor area, including the Slater Subdivision. Lee retired as an owner of Windsor Supply Co. after 65 years. Read More

25 Years Ago This Week

City employees were given a flat $750 annual raise by the Sullivan City Council. The commissioners were authorized to give the department superintendents any additional increase over the $750 if they deemed it appropriate.
Sullivan’s new elementary school was just short of completion, Sullivan School Superintendent Rich Voltz told the school board. The new school would be ready in February if it weren’t for the fact that the gym floor isn’t complete.
Sullivan Middle School Principal Nancy Schaljo accepted a donation from Ray Loy of Jerry’s IGA and Tony Kenworthy of the Central State Coca Cola Bottling Co. The supermarket and Coke donated a nickel from every 12 pack of the soft drink sold during September for worthy projects at the school. Read More

Carson and Rosario Hiser of Bethany hold their first-born child, Luke Martin, the first baby of 2021 born at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Luke arrived at 7:25 p.m. Jan. 1, weighing 7 pounds and 12 ounces and was 21 inches in length.
