Each year, all Illinois school districts are required to have an external audit conducted. This process was completed this summer with the results being shared at our most recent school board meeting.
Once again, I am pleased to report that there were no significant findings that need to be addressed as a result of our annual audit. There were a number of highlights that I would like to share.
Our per capita tuition charge, essentially how much money is spent to educate each student, decreased by about $140 this school year. This was somewhat influenced by an increase in enrollment of approximately forty students. Read More
Sullivan School District Students Improve Math Skills

The 2018-2019 Audit for the Sullivan School District was approved at the last board meeting. The total of all funds for the September 2019 Treasurer’s report were $12,275,866.86. The balance of the Education fund was $4,786,211.95. Transportation fund was recorded at $1,490,691.26 and the Operations and Maintenance was $1,628,165.36.
The board discussed and approved the school improvement plan.
A collection of data was shared among board members showing results of the MAP test (Measures of Academic Progress).
The MAP test is a scientifically based growth measurement system that “informs” the teaching and learning process.
The average total percent of students in grades Kindergarten through fourth grade who were at or above reading level was about 69% in the fall of 2018. In the spring of 2019, that percentage increased to 71.6. In Mathematics, students in grades Kindergarten through grades four were at 67.4 percent in the fall of 2018. In the spring of 2019, the level rose to 75.2 percent.

Obituaries 10-30-2019: Blaine Buxton
Blaine Buxton
Blaine Buxton, 88, formerly of Lovington, passed away at 12:20 a.m. Friday, October 25, 2019 in Mason Point in Sullivan.
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 2, 2019 in the Arthur Southern Baptist Church in Arthur. Visitation with family will be held prior to the service from Noon until service time. Blaine lived with Alzheimers Disease for nine years and has donated his body to Science Care Research. Senior Night Win for SHS Volleyball

The Sullivan volleyball team celebrated a win on Senior Night against Tuscola Thursday but then lost in the Class 2A Teutopolis Regional quarterfinals Monday.
The loss to the host Wooden Shoes ended the Redskins’ season with an overall record of 9-21 and a 2-5 Central Illinois Conference record.
Teutopolis defeated Sullivan in straight sets, 25-13, 25-11. Read More
Ag in the Classroom Continues to Grow

The Bee Lesson taught by Naylor was in conjunction with a pollinator planting with Sullivan Middle School children sponsored by Pheasants Forever at Coyote Cabins in rural Sullivan.

Stephanie Naylor has been named the new Ag In the Classroom Coordinator for the Moultrie County Soil and Water Conservation District. Stephanie took over the position previously held by Erica Lehman.
Erica worked for the district for the last four years and made great strides with the program bringing Ag in the Classroom to all the classrooms in Moultrie County. Her vast knowledge of agriculture also helped the students learn that Moultrie County is more than corn and beans. Sue Yarnell held the position before Lehman and was instrumental from the beginning to getting the program up and running. Read More
Eats Before Treats

Halloween is a busy night so from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Oct. 31 the Lovington campus of Maranatha Assembly of God is offering eats before treats.
Free food is offered at the 228 N. Broadway St. and all the family has to do is drive thru.
They are serving hot dogs, chips, a drink and a treat, and it’s all free.
Rotary Plants at Wyman Park

Members of the Sullivan Rotary Club donated nine trees which were planted in Wyman Park Oct. 24 and Sullivan Middle School students demonstrated there is more than one way to plant a tree.

SMS Science teacher Micah Heddins explained that 380 middle school students were participating in one of three Service Days. Not only were they helping plant trees, students cleared trash from parks, helped the Corp of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville, as well at making fall crafts with residents at caregiving locations.
The Sullivan Parks and Recreation Dept. placed trees.. Rotary member Susan Rauch explained that a variety of trees were chosen including Japanese apples, tulip trees and red maples.[/s2If]
Safe Trick or Treat Times

Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development safe trick-or-treat and the AmBuC’s Halloween parade are in Sullivan Thursday, October 31.
Safe Trick or Treating at a host of businesses in and around the square is from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
At 6:00 p.m. costumed characters are invited to parade around the Sullivan square during the annual AmBuCs Halloween Parade.
Join the fun for great prizes and plenty of Halloween treats.
Trick or Treat in Bethany has been set for October 31st from 6:00-9:00 p.m.
Prairie Winds Perform Sunday

On Sunday, November 3 the Prairie Winds of Sullivan will present a public performance as they begin their 35th year with an Anniversary Show at the United Methodist Church of Sullivan beginning at 2:00 p.m.
The Prairie Winds is a local volunteer group that originally began with eight singers under the direction of Virginia Darnell. They now have expanded to 19 singers and musicians with Debbie Seelhoefer directing. Read More
